At this point it's just kinda fun to tease anyone predicting that a James Cameron movie is gonna flop or underperform. The guy has been on an absolute tear since Piranha II: The Spawning.

I remember like half the people I saw Multiverse of Madness with being cynical about Avatar. I think one guy said if there’s any justice in the world it’d flop.

What a bunch of soulless dorks, tbh!

  3. I should learn to interpret box office numbers, to me a movie either makes record-breaking bazillions or it flops

Hmm no plans tonight maybe I’ll celebrate new years on Pandora

  6. There's a moment in the movie where Quaritch goes "outstanding" that I thought would make for a good GIF/meme. Would use here

Doesn't he do that in the first Avatar too? I feel like that's his catchphrase.

they recycled a bunch of lines/catchphrases, which was weird to me. The story already has enough obvious parallels, at least come up with some new lines.

I dunno, I feel like at least the "outstanding" thing is not a big deal as real people tend to use the same lines in conversation all the time. Sometimes certain phrases are just handy.

  12. I don't remember any dialogue from the first one other than that cheesy "I see you" line, but yeah it seems like this was a parallel or recycled (see here) depending on how you look at it.

If god existed we’d get a couple Marvel flops in a row so they’d try a bit harder

Yeah I just got out, those things are massive. If you don't have Hans Molemans you should be fine

If they bring "outstanding" back in 3 it's officially "I have a bad feeling about this"

    oh relax

not as bad as recycling “this is what pays for the whole party” or whatever

While we're complaining about dialogue, the whole "Sullys stick together" thing made me want to roll my eyes out of my sockets.

Seriously, who says stuff like that?

I actually enjoy the cheesiness and pretty basic plot to these movies

I’ll happily take the “cheesy” sincerity of this film over yet another ironic genre flick that’s embarrassed to be what it is and trying to be “in on the joke.”

Silly blockbusters with a clear voice can be a ton of fun, imo, but holy shit, lol. Sometimes I just want sincere fantasy, without breaking kayfabe! I don’t want your “well, that happened”-isms. Here’s looking at you, Ryan fucking Reynolds, ya dork.

  21. Look, did I really need to see this film a third time in theaters? Probably not. But re: the "gloating conversation," as a non-Marvel guy who also is pretty much done with Star Wars, it just feels good to have a new world to start fresh with. No weird political discourse from fans, no 37 movies to watch to understand this one. Just a capital-M Movie designed to be experienced in theaters, and so far, both friends I have seen it with have enjoyed it immensely. So yeah, I'm going to continue to be stoked for this movie and Cameron's dream project lol.

  22. I second all of these thoughts and this is why I loved Maverick so much, it felt like it broke the norm of cynicism and self-reference with sincerity, a simple yet powerful story and cinematic craftsmanship.

I wish all of that were true of Avatar but to me it feels as gimmicky and insincere as can be. Sure it doesn’t wink at you or anything but it doesn’t keep the story from being vapid.

I would rather hear “Sullys stick together” on loop for the full 3 hours and 10 minutes than hear “aaaaaand he’s right behind me isn’t he” even once
