Can Jason add someone to everyone’s block list? Like, so that that person can still post and have full access to the site the but literally no one can interact with them? That would seem a much better consequence than being banned lol

That sure sounds like you’re limiting discussion. You were so pro on that earlier. What a shame.

They actually do this on reddit. It’s called shadowbanning.

  11. I was hoping they’d release this an hour early or something but I guess not. I’m just gonna go to bed and watch in the morning.

They generally release on PST time. An hour early is still 2 plus hours away.

Edit: over 90 minutes away. I was counting to 3am.

  13. Didn’t expect to read 3 pages of an argument about spoiler tags in the AD thread tonight but

Because some shows drop at different times in different countries, are out in the UK and not America first, and it would mean adding a "release date" for every Netflix (or Hulu/Amazon) show to the thread title and people knowing when the 2 weeks is up (and then doing it again for every single season). I spend every day editing thread titles/prefixes on here and the idea of finding release dates sounds ... whew ... not fun.

Second, the moment you add a different policy for a different medium you add complexity. That means people forget when and where and how spoilers are being shown and when they show up and what thread has what policy and is this a Netflix show or a regular show and when was it out and what do I have to worry about.

I think if you really don't want to be 'spoiled' about something you should leave the discussion. No amount of policy is going to save you if someone makes one tag error while writing a post (it's easy to do) and an entire plot point is ruined. The only way I can tell someone flat out they won't be spoiled is if they don't visit the thread. I can't guarantee that even with a 2 week policy. Someone that doesn't know can ruin that entire thing with one post. Say it's supposed to be two weeks, and 9 days in someone makes a spoiler post because they didn't know ... discussion for all these people are ruined. However, if the expectation is: you're going to see spoilers, then the onus is no longer on the uncontrollable (other people) it is on the person viewing the thread.

If there was a scalable and reasonable way to do it, I would think about how to implement it. I however still don't see a way that's scalable to this forum without a lot of person-power and time. Adding dates to thread titles and needing quite a few more moderators is a lot of time and energy ... and even that's not great.

I'm open to something that doesn't add a lot of extra work to my day. But I have to balance work and what is the most efficient use of my time. If like 300 more of the people here all want to all become supporters ($25 a year ya'll! It's a steal!), I'll be able to really focus on the forums with time and energy and dev work ... and if like 500 more do I'll be able to help pay a little to contributors and mods and that is a huge win ... and if like 2000 do then we're really cooking, and these solutions are much, MUCH, easier. But, I don't see that happening in the short term. Unfortunately. Heh.

  18. ... yes.

But after a while I think most people would realize it has happened. The shadow ban.

(I need to figure out a way to add someone to each other's block list. That would be more helpful in some of these debates. Heh, except if that person was quoted it would become obvious pretty fast.)

On an unrelated note I kinda love that they release things pst just cause I'm used to the east coast time zone getting catered to and I am SELFISH. But also kinda joking so plz no multiple pages of time zone privilege discussions thanx

I think you're getting too hung up on the specifics, which is the exact problem we should be looking to avoid here. The goal shouldn't be to punish people who accidentally spoiler something, it should be to simply remove the "fuck human decency and reasonable standard on when someone might finish this show I'm just 'following the policy' lol" excuses and simply expect the the users on this site to be mature enough to respect the other members.

Ultimately, any hard and strict rules you setup, people will simply use as an excuse to do the bare minimum. I feel like this is a scenario where less would be more.

also for what is worth, not spoilering shit is 100% under the posters control. Not reading the thread is also under the readers control too, sure, but then they can't take part in the discussion until they're already completely done and that ruins a lot of the fun of discussing a TV show.

  22. Well, I've run a forum for over 15 years now so I've not only tried a lot of these options and seen how they play out, but the specifics really matter when I'm the person that has to implement any new policy and it needs to scale to hundreds of threads. I don't understand any part of coming up with a plan here that doesn't involve specifics. The specifics really are all that matter to me when the onus is on me to do them.

I don't think someone reminding people that there will be spoilers in a thread is the same thing as "fuck human decency." If people want to use spoiler tags, they can and will. I think after a movie is out, they shouldn't. I think I would day 1 of a 10 episode TV show, but I dunno, sometimes I just like to write things as I'm watching it. I may be on episode 3 on day 5, and everyone else is done, or someone may not have finished yet, I dunno what they've seen yet, but they do.

I don't know what this means.

I mean when other people in the thread are saying "I want to discuss this show but I'm probably not going to watch it all in one sitting lets use spoiler tags to talk about the episodes" going "nope you are so insignificant to me that I'm not going to take the five seconds it would take to use spoiler tags, and to defend myself I'm going to site the 'site policy'" is 100% asshole behavior. Like you said, you might be on episode 3 on day 5. Wouldn't it be better if you could still talk about episode 3 without accidentally reading about stuff that happened in episode nine?

If you have rules in place as to when spoilers can/cannot be posted without spoiler tags, people will use them as justification for how to behave instead of just reading the thread and inferring from the context in the thread what is/isn't appropriate.

I feel like simply requesting people to be respectful and try to avoid using untagged spoilers for the first few weeks especially if the rest of the thread is using them would likely be more effective than hard rules. Hard rules allow people to disregard of the wishes of the other people in the thread because technically they are following the rules. Soft rules, sure sometimes people will mess up but that's okay because we're are adults so just apologize, forgive and move on.
