This didn't really wow me on first listen. Some of those lyrics, man...I don't know.

Yeah. Unfortunately this is as tedious and heavy-handed as I was afraid it might be. Still really love Lightning I & II and the title track was also really good. First End of Empire song was decent in the middle. Beyond that, almost everything else was either plodding and not memorable or…memorable in a very bad way.

It’s a shame that what could have been a groove heavy Regine track has the refrain “I’ll be your race and religion” which is just not something I can see myself ever getting over. Whichever song was the “unsubscribe” one might be the cringiest AF song yet. I also do not like the other two songs besides Lightning that I heard pre release (Rabbit Hole and Lookout Kid) any more in the album context. They’re both catchy sure but that’s about it and they wear out their welcome pretty quickly.

I’ll definitely give this more tries than I gave the last record but I’d be very surprised if I end up thinking it’s more than “fine” and a few of these songs are going to make it tough to return to as a full album.

Don’t really know what to make of this after the first listen, but disappointment is definitely in the mix. It’s better than Everything Now, at least.

And I hate when people say this about bands/albums, but… this really does feel more like a Win/Regine solo effort than an Arcade Fire album. Which I guess checks out after doing some reading.

But the biggest question for me is: what the fuck happened to Win Butler’s ability to write lyrics? At times, I literally cannot believe this is the same guy that wrote “(Antichrist Television Blues)” and “the Suburbs.” It’s astonishing.

  11. and I mean, (ATB) and Suburbs have some clunkers on the page but good lord is he able to sell them. I couldn't get through End of the Empire I-XIX or whatever the fuck that interminable song is called

This is bad! Wtf. I was so pumped after “The Lightning II”, and I thought “Lookout Kid” was sweet and sentimental. Everything Now is better than this, no lie. The highs on EN are way more consistent than this. This just kind of drags on and it’s nearly all mid. “Age of Anxiety I” and “We” are probably the best non-singles here.

“Everything Now”, “Electric Blue”, “Put Your Money on Me” and “We Don’t Deserve Love” would be 4 of the top 5 songs on this record.

There was a time when Win Butler could sell a big grand catharsis better than maybe any singer alive. He does not have that ability anymore.

I agree, he was always able to make questionable lines work because he had such strong storytelling sensibilities. Just bizarre that he seems to have more or less abandoned that.

The title track off EN is still such a god damn gem.

Win should have stopped trying to interrogate our relationship to technology when he wrote “and every song that I’ve ever heard, is playing at the same time it’s absurd”, it was never gonna write one better than that, a great evocative line.

Really liked the singles but I thought this was just okay. For the most part the lyrics don’t bother me (that’s not to say they’re good), but most of this seemed a bit bland and the songs a minute or two too long. I did really like the first End of the Empire though.

  19. for as much as I hated Everything Now it at least had the aggravatingly catchy title track that I ended up liking in spite of myself, WDDL & Put Your Money on Me. I couldn't even finish this one.

This has exactly 1 track that isn’t better than EN

Anyway, going to unsubscriiiibe from this thread for a bit as I let this thing marinate a bit more. Maybe I’ll end up liking it a bit more, but as of now just feel it’s fine/okay.

I definitely think I'll end up liking this more than Everything Now, for what that's worth. I'm just a little underwhelmed after some of the pre-release buzz and how much I enjoyed the "Lightning" tracks. This definitely ain't better than Neon Bible or The Suburbs, that's for sure.

  24. the lyrics don’t bother me so far

what does bother me is that the first half of this so far feels really quite boring to me

I had a fairly positive first listen. Didn’t blow me away, but am pretty confident I’ll like this more than EN.
