why would it be a disaster? genuinely asking, not sure what the implications of this are to people that simply wouldn't do those things

At this point, I'm for sideloading. Apple has literally crippled entire app ecosystems that can't work on iOS due to their legal/moral stances on various categories (emulators, adult content, vaping) and they use their power to monopolize the app marketplace. They've had it coming and they wanted to have their cake and eat it too. I should be given the option to do what I want with my device. They're already preparing for this in iOS 16 by introducing Developer Mode, which you now have to turn on in order to do any side app installation for things like AltStore and Delta emulator. The Mac has existed for almost 40 years as an open platform. They've introduced GateKeeper and App Notarization to keep the Mac platform secure, and there's no reason why they can't also do this on iOS. Yeah, they're going to lose billions doing this, but this is what they get for being so greedy with still demanding a 30% cut a decade after the App Store opened, AND stifling app innovation at the same time.

Jason Snell wrote an excellent article about sideloading back in February. I agree with his stance: Apple’s worst-case scenario might be the best thing for the iPhone

The ONLY fear I have here is what happens when all the social media apps like Facebook/IG/TikTok/Snap decide to leave the app store and force you to install their versions that don't include Apple's anti-tracking measures. It could lead to an even worse data privacy situation than we've seen before, with these companies now unable to be kept in check with Apple's privacy policies. At that point, I'd just refuse to install certain apps if they left the app store. No way I'm giving anything by Meta unchecked access to my device.

  3. This would happen day 1. It's the main reason I think sideloading should never be government mandated.

I do agree on government mandating being the wrong answer. I don't think governments should have that sort of control over a private corporation's decision-making. I can be for sideloading, while also not wanting government to force the issue.

Also, Facebook got busted doing something very similar with a VPN app where they paid teens and adults $20 to have very deep access to iOS and Android devices. So yes, day 1 they're absolutely going to do it.

At the end of the day, I'm staying in the Apple ecosystem no matter where the cards may fall on this one issue. If i never get true sideloading, I'll be happy with the AltStore alternative. Apple curiously haven't tried shutting it down yet, even though I know they're well aware of it.

If it wasn’t brought to my attention I don’t think I ever would have thought there was a problem with needing to download apps from the App Store and not somewhere else lol. Apple definitely sounds greedy with their percentages and I get the critiques on both sides but it feels like such a silly issue.

Wow, definitely a clear difference in sound on the new AirPods Pros 2. Glad I decided to upgrade even though I know they'll be a new version within the next year or two to accommodate usb-c but I wireless charge what I can these days anyway.

Finally got the Nomad Base One Max a few weeks ago and I'm loving that. Only downside is the Apple Watch doesn't fast charge but aesthetics wins against the other options out there for me.

I went back to where I thought I lost my AirPods (3) last month... only to not find them. My boss then bought me knock off AirPods 2 today as a result... which is super weird. They're decent, but obviously nothing near how good the actual ones are. Really wish AppleCare covered lost/stolen ones.

Tried using my 2nd gen base AirPods to watch a movie on a plane last week and gave up after about 10 minutes. Couldn't hear anything. Gonna have to get some Pros.

Sorry if that was me! I'll not mention my debate with getting a Studio Display next :-p

You won't be disappointed. People often complain that they're a premium for headphones but if they're a daily driver for you then it's 100% worth it.

Glad you like the Nomad! Fast charging for the watch would be nice, but I find it charges pretty quickly in any case and I typically charge mine overnight while I sleep.

The only times I run low on battery midday are when I go for an extra-long run in the morning and I'm using GPS, tracking my workout, and listening to music for several hours. And even then I can get enough juice to last the rest of the day if I just charge it while I'm showering and getting ready for the rest of the day.

As someone already mentioned in the starting of this thread "Rip 3.5mm headphone jack" Year 2016

When I visited here before, I left a comment that read, "Rip iPhone charger" dated 2020.

Continuing the legacy I am once again here to say "Rip iPhone SIM card slot" dated 2022

I'm wondering what might be the next thing to disappear from an iPhone.

According to the rumors, we're losing the lightning port (in favor of USB-C), as well as the mechanical buttons (to be replaced with haptic buttons).

It's still okay because you have a charging port, until Apple decides to remove it and announce that the iPhone only supports wireless charging lol. Yes, I heard about the removal of mechanical button lets see how it goes.

Definitely glad I went with it over the Belkin for aesthetics alone. It has that nice Apple like quality and I agree it still charges pretty fast. I actually wear my Apple Watch to bed for sleep tracking but after my morning workout I put it on charge whilst I get ready and check my emails.

Does anyone know if Apple make the woven USB-C extension cable? I have the woven USBC cable for my iPad Air, but I also use the extender thingy for my Apple USBC charger at all times, would be nice if I could have both parts be this nice new woven style.

FYI, for anyone who wants any Nomad accessories, they're having a pre-Black Friday sale today and tomorrow and you can get 25% off with the code BF9NDKTGR5.

This isn't a referral or affiliate code, I don't get anything for it, they just sent it out to existing customers via email so I thought I'd share since people seem to like their products here.
