My MacBook pro’s out of space and I’m thinking of moving over either my photos or music library. The photos library is way bigger, but I’m reading you shouldn’t move it to an external drive that time machine backs to? Does the same issue exist for music? Should I just get a second external and do it?

On a related note, anyone care to share their backup strategy/setup +\- cloud storage? I used to use crashplan which was cheap and easy external and cloud storage, but it went away and I’ve been using time machine as a holdover.

Sure! I don't use iCloud for anything other than iPhone backups, so I have been in this boat before.

For my photos library, I currently have a Samsung T5 external SSD. To transfer your photos library to that, all you need to do is plug in the external hard drive and drag your photos library from it's current location on your Mac to that external drive. Let it transfer the whole thing, and you're good to go. Photos will automatically look for that drive to launch the library from then on out. If you try to launch without the drive plugged in, it will let you know it can't find your library. With the SSD I'm using, it is as fast to launch the library from the external location as it is the internal drive.

For backups, I have an additional external hard drive. This one is just a regular Wester Digital backup drive with a HDD, since for backups I'm not worried about speed. When you configure your Time Machine backup, you can set it up so that it will include the external drive with your Photos library on it when that drive is plugged in during a Time Machine backup.

Every few weeks I'll plug them both in and I"m good to go. I actually have an additional time machine backup drive too, so I have two system images of the macbook and three copies of my Photos library between all those drives.

    Does that help?

That does help, thanks! I’ve played around with libraries on different drives before but wasn’t sure if time machine was up to par with other paid cloud backup subscriptions.

If the rumors are true, I’m gonna have a hard time choosing between the night blue and space gray iphones this year

That midnight blue that's been made in mockups is really nice looking, but I hope the phone has more features besides 5G and the color blue, and not including a charger.

  9. I'll get a midnight blue one - I hope both Pro's have the Promotion feature so that I don't have to get the 6.7in Max version

I'd almost forgotten about it till I saw the news today. Apple's never been able to achieve success in the social media arena. Ping was... not well-executed. I remember trying it out and quickly giving it up.

  12. The only thing I remember about Ping was that I had like 2 friends on there and that it was so slow to load that it was basically unusable

One half of My 2015 MacBook Pro keyboard has become unresponsive. What’s the likely cost of fixing this thing?

I heard a while back Apple will do this for free?

  15. this will not be covered under the replacement program - it's only for machines with the butterfly switch keyboard.

  16. but you're probably looking at $200-$475 for a repair.

This is probably a daft question, but if i put the back of my homepods against the wall to my neighbours, is it going to blare music loud through to them too?

Does anyone know if Apple still fixes the basel 'scratch' issue that starts to happen on certain MacBook Pro's? My 2015 version has slowly started to see it get worse over the past year and I can't seem to find anything on their website.

I got the magic keyboard recently before the semester started. Honestly, I love this thing a ton. It’s super nice to type on and the trackpad is a great addition to the iPad. Would for sure recommend

Based off where your Homepod is placed it should calibrate to its surroundings and direct sound away from the wall. That being said, it's going to depend on the volume of what you're playing and how thin your walls are.

If you're not sure the Homepod is calibrated to its surroundings, supposedly you're supposed to give it a gentle shake and then play a song.
