so if you can relate to something you know isnt a true story about the author why does perceived authenticity matter?

Not sure. lol but it's definitely a quality i at least like , it's a pretty grey area conversation

I really loved the Kevin Devine interview where he said all song writers are painting with the same colors it's just how you present them is what matters

I didn't get it totally, but I also have to go teach a class so I'll rejoin the convo after school.

i get that. hes saying he likes music thats autobiographical because its the honesty behind the musician and their songwriting that makes it more compelling for him. i totally understand that. when i write fiction, there's plenty of authenticity there-- it's just presented with a facade. with poetry, i drop the facade and write directly based on my personal experience. i think what teebs is saying is that he likes when the artist channels his real feelings and experiences into the music. straight from the horses mouth, so to speak

I guess I'm just someone who cares less about the artist and more about the content. Doesn't matter to me if it's "honest" or "real," if I connect to it then I connect to it either way

I was talking about the content as well, I just mean does it feel like it communicates to the listener in an authentic way does it make you believe what it is trying to convey

What even is this thread? Reading the last five or so pages, it quickly became a nightmare. Lol.

This album was great on first listen and it's great on the multiple listens since. Objectively and subjectively.

A lot of the users on here literally live on this website, so a lot of the time it gets out of hand fast. I don't have the time in a day to post here 80 times, but lots do.

Did I read back a while back in this thread that someone said that this isn't "emo"? If it isn't, then there is no such thing.

After many listens I still really enjoy this album. The pitchfork review is pretty good.

Great record we are lucky to have it. I'm in love with the clean guitar tones. I don't come back to it everyday but when I do it's great

It's a fairly honest assessment to say this sounds a lot like Owen, which isn't a surprise or a complaint but makes me hear the album differently

    Because you're crazy.

The "objectively and subjectively" part was sarcasm. It was in reference to the discussions that are about defining music objectively or subjectively. They're also nightmarish most of the time. Lol.

I have no idea why people don't like this album. Only thing I don't like are the lyrics but wtf would anyone go to American Football for lyrics for?

The instrumentals are amazing. Some of the best indie rock guitar layering I've heard in awhile. I hear this record and think "shit, AF is back." Drum set sounds soooo much fuller and more present too.
