Went back through the thread to check if this had been posted. Only just discovered it.

The Best Ambient Music of 2023

Pretty sweet list. A few I haven’t checked out yet, but the Loscil/Lawrence English, North Americans, Imaginary Softwoods, and Purelink albums are all dope. The North Americans record is def making my ambient top 10.

I’ll draft up my list soon. Curious about everyone else’s as well.

The North Americans and Purelink albums are in my top 10 of 2023, regardless of genre.

  6. I've always said I'd make a separate list for ambient music (even though many albums do find their way into my normal list). Much like the above, in no order:

TALsounds - Shift (more -adjacent, definitely in my general top 5)
Lia Kohl - The Ceiling Reposes
    M. Sage - Paradise Crick
    M. Sage and Zander Raymond - Parayellowgram
    Gia Margaret - Romantic Piano
Mary Lattimore - Goodbye Hotel Arkada
Patrick Shiroishi - I was too young to hear silence (more -adjacent but I'm counting it)
    cinchel - slowly toward disaster
Sachi Kobayashi - Melodies in the Garden
    Siavash Amini - eremos
Colleen - Le jour et la nuit du réel
    Tim Hecker - No Highs
    Hiroshi Ebina - Silver Lining
Sarah Davachi - Selected Works I & II
Eluvium - (Whirring Marvels In) Consensus Reality

Favorite ambient albums for winter? There's finally some snow on the ground here!

  11. Been a fan of Grouper, t e l e p a t h, and 2814, but the rest are new to me! It's definitely time for me to check out Boards of Canada.

Surprised you haven't heard some of these, esp Hammock and Helios if you're a fan of the others.

Boards of Canada are amazing, amazing, amazing precursors to a ton of what you hear today in the genre. probably better to start from Music Has the Right to Children and go chronologically.

    idk man

Not sure how we feel about film scores on this forum but the All Of Us Strangers score is very beautiful. I've been using it a lot as background music while writing this film script and I think it's been indirectly influencing the path my story goes. Highly recommend!
