Thread bump reminded me of how much the last AFI record did absolutely nothing for me.

I did like that one song that came out afterward thought. Caught, I think it was called? What even was that, a b-side or something or just a one off?

I love that they’ve kept Blaqk Audio going.

I recently listened to Bodies. I don’t know what the general consensus is with it, but I freaking love it. I love the post-punk/new wave direction on it. The bass lines are so good.

Davey feels like he has gotten so lazy on vocals over the last decade.

I think BA is actually what Davey and Jade enjoy doing these days. AFI pays the bills, but the last few BA records have been 100% more interesting than Bodies and Blood Album imo.

I was just saying the same thing to my wife. They've now put out three albums in 3+ years, and I think Davey would rather do that now. I feel like Dreamcar was also more inspired than most newer AFI.

I know he had throat surgery a while back, but he still seems like he isn't really going for it. Not to mention his lyrics have gotten a lot less inspired.

  8. I don’t have a problem saying the last decent album they released was Decemberunderground.

was Sing The Sorrow before or after that one?

EDIT: Ah, it was before. I don’t think I really sat down with any of their albums since Decemberunderground came out.

i kind of agree, i’m gonna be honest and say i have not yet gotten around to Bodies. I liked some of Crash Love but found the subsequent two a bit boring. DU was the start of my fandom and, apparently, a peak for them.

I don’t hate Bodies, but to my ears it’s almost completely devoid of hooks and I find it extremely difficult to remember anything about most of the songs seconds after I listen to them.

I’ve enjoyed every other AFI release. There’s been some definite misses along the way, but every other record has a handful of songs I come back to.

Burials and Crash Love are both very underrated. I’d maybe say the same about The Blood Album if the production wasn’t so muddy.

  15. Besides being lyrically veryyyy straight edge, XTRMST is a really fun listen.

Burials is pretty good I think. It and XTRMST are proof that davey could still do heavy vocals if he really wants to. he just doesn't.

Blood is half great half boring and I agree that a producer would've helped there.

I was gonna say that Davey and Jade clearly care way more about BA too. It almost feels like AFI is them on autopilot and BA is their real passion. I definitely liked Bodies more than Blood though

However I do think Burials is a mostly fantastic album, it's the last one where they really sounded like they cared imo

Pretty much exactly how I feel. I like The Blood Album and Crash Love, and I loved Burials...but Bodies is just blur to me. I listened to it maybe 5 or 6 times all the way through and couldn't remember a single song. It seemed like each track would start out great instrumentally but then quickly go into some boring, droning vocal line and I would just check out.

I guess that's what bothers me about some of the newer stuff from them. I don't need Davey to scream or do anything in particular, but he seems content to just drone over the top of every song instead of coming up with something unique or identifiable. There are hardly any actual hooks or melodies that stick out.

  22. Bodies has been their only miss for me out of all their projects, but yeah at this point I'm more interested in what they've got to offer through Blaqk Audio.

You articulated how I feel perfectly. Couldn’t agree more. Davey used to be the focal point of this band’s songs, now he’s just kind of there

They really need a producer on the next release as the last two albums have greatly suffered without one.
