Honestly, I knew of the song, and I believe American Head Charge covered it, but reading those excerpts from her about why she wrote the song makes me ten kinds of uncomfortable.

 

yeah, i'm not sure how to feel. i love patti smith to death, the song just never really sat right with me so i skipped it on listens of that album.

I didn't write that last sentence, but I think the difference is, the Kanye stuff is actively developing. That's what the discussion has been about almost exclusively since the Manson stuff.

I guess my point being moreso that in the "policing" of the message boards things get muddy...like I think Kanye literally being a neo-nazi and being obsessed with Hitler far outweighs the actions of other problematic artists

 

Because Kanye is an actively developing story and discussion and what can be said about Brand New now since it was revealed their lead singer was a creep and they haven’t done anything since their last album? If people want to reminisce on them, there’s a whole ass subreddit where that’s all they do.

 

I agree that they can get muddy, but I'm not here to argue whether Jesse Lacey or Kanye West is a worse person lol. I just think it's natural and worthwhile to discuss major current events, whether they're a part of our little scene or music/entertainment at large - especially when those events pertain to accountability.

 

In the Kanye thread no one is talking about the music, it’s developments on what is going on with his downfall. It’s essentially news updates at this point. Whether that warrants keeping the thread open I am not sure, but I think it’s important to look and see what is being posted in the thread.

Even in places like the Kanye subreddit you see VERY few posts about the music. It’s so beyond that at this point.

separate from the .K. thing who is clearly a dork that needs to go, some of us don’t like to talk and argue about who is and isn’t problematic and why day in and day out but still want to talk about music, and as I thought has been established it’s fine to recognize problematic behavior and still listen to someone’s music, like in cases where band A is touring with band B and band B has allegations against them, are we gonna get banned for still talking about band A’s music and get yelled at for ignoring allegations? where does the line even get drawn and who decides? seems literally impossible and, as I said, ridiculous

 

I also think some of the things people get upset about just frankly aren’t a big deal, I don’t go around starting arguments about it and let people be mad if they want, that’s fine, but am I gonna get banned because I don’t think something that happened was bad enough to stop listening to a band but someone else does? where does it stop?

 

I think it's really easy to tell when someone just wants to talk about the music and when someone is like .K clearly trying to stir up shit and make people upset, I dunno. That's more in response to Andrew's "blanket ban" comment than your posts because yeah, I think there are tons of times people just seek out those environments and I think that's different than just wanting to talk about a problematic or touring-with-problematic artist you enjoy the music of, which should be fine.

 

yeah like I said that dude is clearly just pushing buttons and at the end of the day it should really just come down to individual cases like it did back on ap.net, I don’t think we need a community reckoning of who needs to get banned and who needs to stay, just let the mods handle it however they want and if you disagree take it up with Jason, not like the dudes completely inaccessible lol

 

Yes sorry my blanket ban comment was more in response to what K is doing than anything else, and was definitely not articulated clearly by me at all. It was intended at people like K who feel like they are doing the separation in a malicious intent.

 

I just…I have other shit going on than to care if that dork bumps a thread that no one else is posting in, ya know? It’s one thing if the entire site is hype for a band that features a rapist on drums. K being ignorant doesn’t really require ~discourse~ haha
