Just absolutely wild that this dude would pivot to working with minors when a simple google search of his name brings up all the allegations. Equal parts stupid and sickening

Preach. Somebody needs to tell this dumb dumb that there are tons of jobs on Indeed that don’t require background checks. Jobs not in the music realm! Jobs not requiring holding a power over a minor!

Why does Lacey need a job to begin with? Did the Brand New money run out already? His wife is a celebrity tailor who works with multi-millionaire NBA and MLB superstars.

Just lay low, take care of your kids, and dont do anything that would draw more attention to your past misconduct. Don’t come out of retirement for Bamboozle, don’t do this guitar lesson BS anymore. Just use your head and be smart, FFS. Though, if he was smart from day one, he never would have done anything skeevy that could have made him look bad in the first place, so that’s an impasse.

i scowered twitter but cant find anything. the school needs to be held accountable as well if they hired someone with that past. considering how much noise parents like to make im surprised this hasnt shown up yet in school board meetings. at least not yet. im guessing that will be coming soon and music media will pick it up making people aware because this is a pretty quiet corner of the internet.

I did some digging and found a series of Reddit posts two months ago from someone claiming to be a music lawyer with insider info who said the exact same thing. This lawyer also said that he has read the contract Brand New wrote to break up the band and that the members wrote it as strongly as possible to prevent them from ever coming back. I don't know why it only leaked on Twitter today, but I'm inclined to believe this lawyer guy.

"Jesse is a house husband. He was giving private guitar/songwriting lessons but most of his customers were high school kids and word got out about his past, so that put an end to to that. He does literally nothing now other than watch the kids while his wife keeps a roof over their head.

You’re not gonna find a source lol. Look, Jesse Lacy isn’t famous. He’s highly revered in certain online circles, but your average Joe — especially in Tennessee — doesn’t know who he is, and he’s basically anonymous at this point. Also, not everything that happens in life happens on the internet. Sometimes things play out among people and it isn’t broadcasted to the whole wide world.

I don’t know every detail of what exactly what went down, but I think most people here are aware that he’s been giving lessons and conservatorships in his town. Someone, somewhere connected the dots and he doesn’t do that anymore. His wife removed her IG feed posts for a bunch of reasons, but that played a role for sure.

Vin teaches yoga in Joshua Tree; Garrett gives skydiving instructions and organizes similar activities/experiences for people; Brian is a commercial pilot who has helped Garrett organize those activities/experiences; Jesse does essentially nothing outside of parenting. He was working with local folks to instruct music but he stopped recently for what should be very obvious reasons. Maybe this is upsetting for fans to hear but it’s the truth.

Like I said, Jesse isn’t famous and he lives a very private and anonymous life now. If someone has no reason to suspect an individual has a controversial past, they’re not gonna go out of their way to Google them, are they? That said, nothing stays hidden forever.

The only thing I know for sure is they’ll never play together again. I’ve seen the paperwork lol. From a legal standpoint, The Smiths have a better chance of reuniting.

They’ve taken certain measures with their publishing LLCs and trademarking that indicate they have no intention of continuing Brand New in any way, shape or form. Now, they could definitely unravel that stuff if they wanted to — bands reunite all the time, right? — but let’s just say that they have gone extra hard to really put Brand New to bed. I get the sense that they’re serious.

For starters, pretty much everything related to PMT has lapsed, and everything related to the band from an intellectual property standpoint was funneled through PMT, so it’s easy to put two and two together. Sure, it would be easy for them to pick that back up, but the general inactivity is a big indication that they do not intend to revive the band, especially as a business enterprise or LLC.

And then, from a trademark perspective, they all basically made each other sign non-competes. So let’s say Jesse decides he wants to put a band together and tour — he can’t use the moniker “Brand New.” Same goes if like, Jesse and Brian Lane decide they wanna release music together — they can’t use the moniker “Brand New.” It’s so rigid that even if they decided to reunite, they still might not even be able to use the name “Brand New” because the agreement is in perpetuity, kinda like how the Danzig-led Misfits have to perform as The Original Misfits, and not just The Misfits.

Now, this is not a Misfits situation on a personal level. From all accounts, the guys are on very good terms. It’s also not about money whatsoever, from what I’ve gathered. My personal perspective on this is that they made it extra hard to revive Brand New in order to avoid the temptation of reviving Brand New. I think the members of the band see Brand New as something that enables things about themselves that they don’t like — especially Jesse, because duh. It explains the years of inactivity, the disconnected attitude of the band in general, the way they were literally celebrating the end of it all in 2018 before the Jesse stuff broke. It’s all very clear."

This is really besides the point, but this person either has no idea what they're talking about or they're not a very good lawyer. Anything the members of the band agreed to regarding the band can be easily undone by the members of the band simply agreeing to undo it.

And member(s) of the band technically could use the name Brand New in relation to their musical careers, regardless of what their dissolution agreement says. The other member(s) could try to stop them, but they would have to sue, go to court, incur legal fees, etc.

It's privilege and misogyny that he can't sleep in a van in a parking lot? Christ, don't be a musician then, abandon the dream like most of us had to

He’s talking about how it’s much more unsafe for women/queer folks/trans folks to sleep outside in their van compared to men in bands who were belittling/mansplaining/shaming a woman led band for not wanting to do that.

are we still lucky to be here? Prestigious

It's a valid article with some important points that need to be discussed, but there was a lot of discourse on hardcore twitter among touring acts including some with female/queer/non-binary/POC individuals about this. It would have been interesting to get some on-the-record perspective from peeps like in GEL and Body Void that I saw who commented on.

Basically, it reads like playing SXSW is just a fucking scam to begin with.

First of all, part of the issue here is safety but since you’re not addressing that I’ll pass over it. One band that I tour with has multiple members with chronic pain issues, myself now included. It’s not feasible for any of us to sleep in an area where we can’t jostle and stretch. I was on another tour with a different band where it was pretty much all van all the time and I had a flair up so bad it took 4 hour long appointments with my stretch therapist to to get back out of the woods. No one should have to compromise their physical well-being just to be a musician. People with the “suck it up” outlook make me feel like we’re not providing anything and are just caged monkeys here for your entertainment. We’re not. We’re real people and deserve to be treated as such.
