Yeah, I’m not yet sure what to make of that. Like, on the one hand, nudity is not inherently sexual. On the other, a child can’t consent to having their photo taken like that and when they grow up to be conscious of having had that photo taken, they could easily not be okay with having it widely distributed like this, and could be suffering harm from it. Also fucked up that he / his family were not paid for it after it went on to become the cover art for one of the biggest albums of the 90s. I would not presume that the members of Nirvana had malicious intent, but also i think there have to be ways to compensate that dude for both his impact on the album and any undue mental or emotional stress being the baby on the cover has caused him. As far as restorative justice beyond financial compensation, I’m not sure what that would look like but I do hate the idea of the guy experiencing issues because of it.

Relatedly, i read something once about Kurt saying that his only permissible edit to the artwork would be to allow it to be sold with a sticker over the baby’s penis that said something like “if you think this is child pornography you’re a pedophile” and (not to play into generational sniping - which is always reactionary - but) that is a deeply eye-roll worthy Gen X-er sentiment.
