Run For Cover, Asthmatic Cat (Sufjans label), Suicide Squeeze, and a long list of others also fall under the Secretly umbrella for distribution.

NFTs are bad for the environment, and it makes the Gorillaz hypocrites after writing music about how the Earth is being destroyed

  9. Gorillaz doing an NFT doesn't really surprise me, they've always kind of experimented with whatever tech thing was going on.

However, if we're going to question the environmental impact of NFTs, we should also start critically assessing the environmental impact of streaming music, plastic production, vinyl production, merch production, touring, etc. We absolutely should and some bands are attempting to do their part, but where is the willingness of the industry to do much about any of those things? Or any industry for that matter?

I'm not saying it's hopeless, but there needs to be government policies that regulate or limit production of all of the above for it to have concrete effect on climate damage.

  10. maybe it doesn't fit in with the other topics in this thread but I feel like contributing to an unimaginably environmentally damaging practice like minting NFTs and displaying staggering levels of tone-deafness and hypocrisy merits inclusion in here. just me tho

Tim and Eric announced an NFT, were called out by fans and then took it down and apologized and admitted ignorance. Can always hope that they will do that as well.

What's the deal with the (alleged) "green" way to produce NFTs coming out? Is there any validity in that? The article I was reading made it sound like a pipe dream

OK I guess. If we start listing out all the artists that are selling NFTs in this thread though, I feel like the point is kinda being missed...

    Grimes
    Gorillaz
    Kings of Leon
    Aphex Twin
    Mike Shinoda
    Lil Pump
    Shawn Mendes
    Toro y Moi
    Yaeji
    Mura Masa

the list goes on.... just feels out of place in this thread to start listing and calling them all out

  13. Yeah that's fair. I don't want any part of that shit and I don't want the bands I listen to involved either. fuck all of that.

  14. If y'all want to keep track of everyone selling NFTs because you don't want to support artists who use them, that is your prerogative but I think that needs to be its own thread.

In theory I find it interesting, basically a new form of collectors items or owning art. But there are huge detrimental effects to the environment. Check the Kings of Leon thread. I believe I linked an article there

I think that a major part of the discourse around NFTs has been their environmental impact, to the point that no one selling one could reasonably not know that they are negatively impacting the environment at a time when climate change is a current and growing threat. So I would like to know what artists are selfish enough to go that route so I know not to support them.

Now, that doesn’t have to be in this thread, necessarily. But it is an issue of accountability, to my mind, so it makes sense why someone would post it in here.

I would add that there potential ways to reduce the energy expenditure that I believe are being explored.

I don't view them as bad or good. It's just new technology that comes with some second-order effects that need to be considered, like pretty much everything else. I don't think they belong in this thread.

The impact on electricity from streaming music is minimal and can be offset by renewables.
Plastic production (I work in a heavily plastics-focused industry, full disclosure) is a disaster for this planet but mostly in the form of single-use plastics, and medium use plastics (cars, electronics, etc.).

At least vinyl records tend to last a long time in use. Think about your parents records from the 60s that still play and still hold value. I do think records need to do more on sustainability. Using PCW, not doing gate-folds, no 2xLPs unless absolutely necessary, etc.

  24. For streaming music, I didn't actually start thinking about it until I saw this article:
Is Streaming Music Dangerous to the Environment? One Researcher Is Sounding the Alarm

With growing amount of users, I don't think it's insignificant. NFTs are so much worse because of the involvement of cryptocurrency, but yeah.

With vinyl, it's great if you're parents keep the records. Very good archivable material. Unfortunately, my parents trashed 'em when CDs and cassettes replaced their collection, haha. Not sure where the answer is with vinyl waste other than find a non-petroleum based replacement. I'd love to see that happen someday.

As for my label, except for a 7 inch I had pressed in Nashville, all of my records have been pressed somewhere I can pick them up in California. 100% recycled print work whenever possible, and I utilize paper carton tape w/o fiberglass reinforcement. Those might be the best solutions I can have for a small label. But I want to do more. I try to do more whenever I'm at a company and in power to do something.

Plastic manufacturers bear responsibility for the sheer volume of waste regarding single and medium use plastic, trying shove the responsibility on the consumer. I do think they should be forced to take responsibility of their waste and retool their product to make it less harmful for the environment. That might only happen if they're forced to by law.
