I’d make an exception for Morgan, because I truly detest what Nashville turned country music into and he’s the face of it, the embodiment of it. However, it is counterproductive ultimately so I’ll stop now

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

Yet the same users continue to do it over and over again. It's exhausting that this has to be said constantly.

He put up the "OK sign" while saying "three" during his song. He also put up all fingers on his hand for "five" earlier during the same song.

i mean, regardless of whether he meant it as the White Power OK symbol or not, he still posed in front of a Confederate flag so fuck him too

Personally, I look at hick as a frame of mind. Living here in MO, I’ve seen poor hicks and well off hicks, they all act the same regardless of their bank account. They’re all trash.

I mean one of my close friends listens to Morgan Wallen and he’s not a “hick” at all. It’s a bad idea and not appropriate at all to generalize a whole group of people (and all hicks are not bad people anyways) who listen to an artist, not to mention irrelevant to the point of this thread.

I also live in Missouri and know some very good people that would be classified as hicks. Let's just drop that categorization. It's not helping.

  9. Honestly, what would possess a person to rub someone's nose in the fact that a person whose art they enjoyed wound up being a piece of shit? What does that do for accountability besides push people away from actually caring?

We just gotta give the guy obsessed with college sports some clout since he doesn't like it!

This is valid and I begrudgingly agree, tell your buddy to stop listening to a bigot though.
Also valid. I just hate those kinds of shithead people, man. Like to my core I hate those people, the world would truly be a better place without those jerks offs in it but there’s nothing I can do about it.

Dismissing country music fans as "just dumb hicks" has never been and never will be productive. And in any case, Morgan Wallen is absolutely one of the biggest pop stars of the moment, which is why this story is such a big deal. His crossover success, the size of his fanbase, and the broad demographic reach his fanbase covers are all reasons that we're seeing and hopefully will continue to see more accountability in this situation than we've seen for, say, Jason Aldean being a racist shithead. Hopefully it will actually help to move the needle on changing things in country music. Either way, there are more useful conversations around this situation to be had than "People who listen to this kind of music are trash" or "Y'all should have know that your drunken buffoon country star would do something like this."

Jason Aldean is proof that white privilege exists.

Being a shithead is not exclusive to genre

I totally get it. Working in St. Joseph, I know the kind of people you're talking about and I also know people that fit their look/demeanor that are completely the opposite when it comes to their opinions/actions. I get the anger, but I don't think the label helps.

For country fans or those interested, Marissa Moss is a great follow and defender of country music. She's a wonderful voice in the community.

I mean my friend was listening to him prior to this incident when, yes, he had done some dumb things like break COVID rules and get in fights at bars, but hadn't done anything racist like this. I just think it's bad to criticize people for listening to an artist prior before they do or say something extremely inappropriate.

Thank you and you’re totally right. It’s on me with that term and this thread has made valid points about it. I apologize for derailing this thread with my bullshit, honest. I got my own shit I need to deal with.

Also, worth noting that the many, many artists in country music that DON'T think or behave like Morgan Wallen are in a unique position to reach and educate ignorant fans. And for all that country radio and much of the corporate side of the industry is a corrupt garbage dump, there is a lot of good progress happening in the genre right now.

I find it fascinating that country is such its own little world. Literally never heard of this guy before today (besides vaguely remembering him being cancelled from SNL) and apparently he’s like the biggest star in that scene.
