I'm still on this - gonna be mad all night now - the replies mostly in support of his straight up abusive misogynistic ass and people wanna talk about feminism in the replies like "feminists want to kill men" when it's literal abusers like him who don't bother to hide it that make women feel unsafe every single fucking day? Like the dude is straight up abusing a woman before our eyes and yet people are like "lol that clapback!" Don't ever fucking talk to me about my feminism when I see every single day a man like that getting away with it.

Thanks! OhTheWater misspelled his name I guess. That makes a lot of sense and now I can actually Google correctly.

After years of posting on a messageboard that Joe Hardcore also posted on, it does not surprise me that he wouldn’t book that many bands with women in them.

The hardcore subculture can attract some of the most toxic dudes around which is why I never went to shows in high school. All of the guys were assholes. A lot of the guys from my town who were a part of it can now be found working drunk at skateshops and not taking no for an answer when hitting on women at the bar. I have friends from other cities that are or were a part of their local scene who are great and I know a lot of women into hardcore as well. My personal experience however has almost always been negative.

There are tons of women and those who are non-binary who I'm sure are interested in hardcore but feel unwelcome in the scene and that really sucks.

I think it’s also worth noting who Joe Hardcore is. This is a guy who used to be a big figurehead in FSU (Friends Stand United) and was even in the Gangland episode talking about the gang. He’s well known for being a stereotypical hardcore guy and he was praised for that on the B9, which was its own hive of scum and villainy when it was still a thing. When I say that it doesn’t surprise me that Joe would book TIH that way, that’s why.

Shit, what a fucking scumbag. I'd never trust a former FSU guy with anything, let alone play a festival that he booked. Hardcore is very weird.

Gouge Away should have been on there. Year Of The Knife will be on that Pure Noise Tour so they weren't available... Besides these two, they could have booked Mortality Rate (their latest 7" is awesome) and perhaps Super Unison or Result of Choice.

90% of the other current, touring hardcore bands that feature women are kindaaa ripping off Krimewatch (yikes), and I can't wait for this trend to die and for bands to try new things.

Joe Hardcore is definitely a misogynist and this sucks, but unless I'm living in a cave, there's also not a ton of quality "female-fronted" (I hate that term) hardcore bands in 2019. If I'm wrong, send them over to me via DM, I'd be stoked.

Ok but I mean you kinda answered your own question here yeah? Initiate, No Right, Firewalker, Nosebleed, etc. Point is there is a good amount of dope bands with women, and idk Sound and Fury certainly managed to put them on the lineup

  19. Windowsdown

Initiate and No Right are precisely who I was thinking about (generic fast hardcore with high-pitched vocals) when I was mentioning bands that bore me. Firewalker is an acquired taste and it's just not for me I guess. I will check out Nosebleed !

I have to disagree with you though, I check out a lotttt of hc bands (randomly) every month and there's such a small fraction of bands with women in them, it's a bit depressing.

I'm not american so I haven't been to Sound and Fury but I imagine that this fest is a bit more progressive that TIHC. I've also noticed that a lot of bands that play one don't play the other, so there might be an exclusivity clause in some of these agreements, I don't know.

The exclusivity clause could certainly be a factor, that hasn’t been something I’ve thought about.

Regardless, if you feel that bands like Initiate and No Right are generic, that’s fine. I know personally Firewalker aren’t my cup of tea either. But let’s call a spade a spade, it’s not like there aren’t generic bands on the TIHC lineup as it stands. I get that they don’t want to tokenize, which is fine, but as mentioned it doesn’t seem like other hard-core fests have this problem nearly to this extent

Also, you might be thinking of a different band than No Right because they sound nothing like Krimewatch.

are we still lucky to be here? Prestigious

    A couple points of response:

    1) At the rate Gouge Away is going, they don't need to be on This is Hardcore to increase their exposure at all. Considering the support runs they have/will have this year (La Dispute, Basement/Nothing, Thrice/Refused), they're well on their way to building plenty of clout.

    2) There are a lot of hardcore bands that feature female/non-binary/trans members that don't just ape Krimewatch especially if you get outside of the fast hardcore/democore scene that's popping up nowadays...especially in the powerviolence/grind adjacent areas. Not that they'd necessarily be on the purview of This is Hardcore just given the description.

A lot of what I think the issue around this stems from what Madison from YOTK describes in this article she did for No Echo:
“Female-Fronted” Is Not a Fucking Genre | Features It's a great piece that should be read by anyone browsing this thread.

    3) I think this entire thread can agree that Joe Hardcore is a piece of crap. Let's just leave it at that. :)

In my personal opinion, it’s silly to compare those bands to Krimewatch and hold it against them when practically the bulk of TIHC’s lineup are paint by numbers hardcore bands

I dislike the idea that the band has to be “female fronted” for representation to count. There’s bands like fucked up with women in them that aren’t front and center but, you know, still exist

    A Humble Snail Prestigious

Exclusivity clauses are usually radius based, I find it much more likely that bands either weren’t available or don’t want to work with Joe.

Sound and Fury also didn’t book bands like Regulate or Heavy Chains. Festivals like TIHC and UB are disgustingly bad at this point

I would hope that TIHC doesn't have a radius clause since the undercard are probably not making much money from this, and restricting northeast touring for a few months basically means these guys can't make money for a season.

There are also a ton of female/non exclusively cis guy-inclusive hardcore bands that definitely aren't playing leather punx krimewatch stuff (SYSC?, war on women, fucked up, mortality rate, razorbites, super unison, firewalker, HIRS [idk if they'd play, but they're local],oathbreaker, etc). Hard to say who would and wouldn't play this since it seems like those bands are not your typical NYHC-rip band that fills the TIHC undercard, but a big portion of interesting hardcore and punk bands have non-cis guys in them. idk how many of those bands are European or too far to bring to the fest but they've brought in Japanese and Korean bands before, so who knows.

TIHC has always felt to me like hardcore's version of baby boomers where they have a specific idea of what hardcore is and god forbid you try and change that, and that usually means putting on a show with your
boys' band and their boys' bands and boom you have an interchangeable, homogenous lineup once more!
