Kind of ridiculous this article starts out with “I haven’t seen the doc”

How are people still questioning Michael Jackson? Like, this has been known for 25+ years. Chris Rock had an entire stand-up on it like, 15 years ago. Maybe it's an age thing, but MJ has always been a pedophile and I didn't think there were still people who questioned it.

I didn't need this new doc to convince me.

It's just because he's famous and musically talented. Like, look at that recent documentary on Netflix Abducted in Plain Sight. It took less than 90 minutes for people to agree that that dude is a pedophile asshole but it's been 25 years of similar stories of MJ spending tons of time with kids, sleeping with them, the kids saying he did what he did, etc... and there are still somehow doubters.

It's just fame, money, power, etc...

I mean I'll out myself when I was young I def bought into that whole "MJ is like a giant child! He's faced trauma and is trying to process and is just ~eccentric." Thing. That was based off casual mentions and information since I never follow him that closely. Once I became more informed about both life and the case I realized how wrong I was. I hard to learn that Michael can also be a victim of abuse while being a victimizer of others. I think the media also did a good job of painting him as a weird guy but not taking the allegations seriously. The only thing I knew of the trials was the doves that were released by that fan. I never heard that a kid could accurately describe his penis or even critically thought about him sleeping in bed with children.

But I mean I was also young and dumb which is embarrassing but like to be old and dumb... Yikes

I got into MJ's music for the most part right after he died. I spent some time looking into the allegations but I was way too willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, that he was just a weird guy who people maybe sought to take advantage of, like Kiana was saying. And I didn't see anything conclusive about the cases and also read something about one of the victims later claiming he lied & his parents put him up to it (which ended up being not credible of course). I think part of my doubt about it was not wanting to believe someone so famous and talented could also be a predator in that way. Another part was just not wanting to believe that these things happen in a general sense except very rarely. I've learned a lot since then but a lot of people have trouble reconciling their feelings about a famous abuser's art and public image with the idea that they could be guilty of something awful.

Michael Jackson died in I was fairly young, so in hindsight I just sort of took it stride cause I assumed it was all speculation & all megastars do sketchy stuff because no one is immune to letting power go to their head. Plus-- homeboy's dead, so I assumed it wasn't worth investing time into.

But now, I understamd holding people accountable, even retroactively, is necessary to create a less predatory culture.

For the record I wasn’t trying to ‘out’ anyone and my post wasn’t even really referring to anyone on this site. Obviously many people on here were pretty young when all this was going on originally, or even when he died.

I just see people online that seem genuinely shocked that MJ is being accused of this kind of stuff due to the HBO doc just being released and it seems like for some, it’s the first time they’re ever hearing anything about it, and it blows me away.
