Yeah I remember some girls leaked text messages about this stuff- I think it might've even been on MySpace/early days of Facebook, so it's been a while ago. I think a lot of people gave them a pass because they were already hated/no one took it seriously at the time.

A promoter I know in Chicago booked a BOTDF show a couple years back, but being in his late 30s and a little out of touch he had no idea about the scandals surrounding this band. A bunch of people brought it to his attention and he looked into it, thought "fuck that, I don't want this trash in my venue" and cancelled the show. I commended him for that, to which he replied, "Just doing my part!" Helped my faith in humanity a bit haha.

I have an unfortunate story, not my own, but something I witnessed.

In 2010 I attended a concert. After that concert I met some people who had gone to see the same bands as me. One of them was a 16 year old girl who claimed that she had met one of the bands, had hung out with them in their bus, and that someone in their camp (it was unclear if it was a musician or a tech person or just someone affiliated with the band) got her number and proceeded to send her inappropriate texts and express a desire to sleep with her, etc. She was bragging about this unfortunately, so she did not understand how wrong and predatory it was, and her friends were able to convince her, thankfully, not to go along with it.

This is a band that, to my knowledge, has not been accused of anything like this. I won't reveal the band's name since A. it's not my place and B. I don't even know if it was a member of the band or that the band even knew what was going on, so for all intents and purposes they may be innocent. But it's just kinda sickening to realize how prevalent all of this is and how things like this can just go under the radar, maybe even never to surface.

As I Lay Dying has a tour going on and I have people asking if I'm going to go.

First, I never liked them and thought they were overrated.

But second, and more importantly, they're all scum. I can't believe that situation at all. So gross.

People can take online comments how they want I guess, but often on ONTD when there's a post on bands from the "scene" whose heyday was around that 2004-2010 era there are always tons of commenters who tell stories from when they were underage and having bands ask for or send nudes or whatever. It's always super difficult to read, espesh coming on sites like these when a bunch of men will be like "that musician is such a stand up dude! Never hear a bad word about them!" And I'm like ummmm listen to women and see if their stories aligns with that because often they don't. I dont remember what post it was, maybe the news on Steve Klein? But I specifically remember an ontd post shared a while back that had some really awful stories shared from these band dudes where many are still successful

I’ve checked out of this thread for a long time so I apologize if I am not up to date.

Every time a new band joined the list of bands and musicians who’ve partaken in this predatory behavior I’ve deleted all of their music off of my Apple Music.

It’s easy most of the time but it also isn’t clear what is right at this point. How do I reconcile years of emotional attachment to certain music like the discography of Brand New with the reality of how I feel about the band as humans now?

I ask this now because my Apple Music somehow ended up on Shuffle while I was driving and the 2nd song to come on was a Brand New single I didn’t realize was still in my library and for a few seconds not thinking about it I enjoyed the track before my brain kicked in and I skipped to the next track up. When I got home I went in and deleted the track, but not before giving one quick guilty listen to “No Control” which was my favorite track off of “Science Fiction” before all the news came out.

So I ask everyone again - where are we at with the bands? How do you personally handle it? Do you listen to them still and separate them as humans from their music that you loved for so long or do you delete it all and say good riddance? Will you ever go back to them in the future? Do you think your friends are wrong if they still listen to a band like Brand New after these revelations? If they do still listen to these bands do you think less of them for it or you understand but just choose not too?

I ask that last question bc some girl posted a status on FB about how Deja Entendu will always be life and I commented saying Deja Entendu and the rest of their music died for me the moment I realized what kind of person Lacey was and she said that doesn’t stop her and she still loves the music anyway and that “everyone always knew he was an asshole anyway”. I didn’t see the point in arguing with her on it and I didn’t even know what I’d be arguing if I tried so I just dropped it from there but it left me thinking about things again.

Well, I’ll be around to check for any replies.

I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer because it’s all subjective. You deal and process it in the way that’s best for you. Personally, I sold all my collectibles and don’t listen to them anymore, and once I can afford to get my tattoo covered I will be able to fully wash my hands of them. But I can’t (and don’t) expect everyone to have the same reaction, even if doing so is a no-brainer in my eyes.

I have a lot of emotional ties to Brand New, and it helped to realize that just because the band was shitty and gross, it doesn’t mean those memories are dirty, too. They can exist separately from the reality of what Jesse was doing and his bands complicit silence.

If that girl's position is "everyone knew he was an asshole anyway" she probably doesn't grasp the full scope of the situation/doesn't want to and doesn't intend to. I think most people were unaware he was a pedophile and "asshole" isn't really a fitting description for someone who grooms teen girls

Otherwise, well, it's really a battle with yourself as to where you draw the line, as long as you keep that stuff to yourself (don't help the abuser's music reach any more people) and don't give any money to the abuser. Personally I can't envision myself interacting positively with, say, brand new without instantly morally bankrupting myself, but that's just me

I was hoping 5sos would be cancelled after that rolling stone interview. This is even more reason

  13. It looks like 5SOS kicked The Faim off the tour even after they booted the guitarist from the shows. What was the RS interview? I think I missed it.

  14. This was in the thread, I don't think I ever saw the original story but yikes. The way in which he approaches this subject does NOT bode well, even if it's (meaning having sex) not inherently problematic at face value.

    Good to know!

Hopefully they learned from the interview. It was a few years ago. garnered a lot of controversy at the time. Objectifying women and talking about them like trophies to win on tour. Whining about all the teenage girl fans and not wanting to just be for girls. After talking about all the female fans they sleep with. Just douchey sexist bs

  17. I know for a fact that band fucked around with young girls when they first got big. Not sure about what was and wasn’t legal cause I think 3 of them were like 17 at the time.

I'm mad at 5sos all over again lol like female fans aren't good enough to have as your base but they're good enough to sleep with. Men are the wooooorst

It doesn't matter to me. I don't need the musicians I love to be good people in order to enjoy their work.

Also, I'm surprised that more of the 2000s Warped Tour era bands haven't been outed yet. I've heard rumblings about acts like The Used, Senses Fail, and 30 Seconds to Mars for years.

  20. I honestly have started to get weird feelings since the Brand New thing started a huge wave of allegations. Even bands I've loved and basically idolized for years like All Time Low I feel like I don't look at them the same way.

  21. Also I'm sick of all these fucking bands just booting a member and giving a generic "we support victims" statement. Do something. Fucking call him out. I want to hear bands openly hold other musicians accountable in interviews and whatnot.
