Gender reveals is one of those things I'll never get. I assume it's one of those cisnormative traditions that some people are deeply conditioned to do without giving any thoughts regarding the hows or whys. Plus the celebrated will never remember anything about it so... who is it actually for? (rhethorical question)

 

I don't fully get it, either, but having a kid is a big life-changing moment. I just think most are trying to have the most fun, suspense or whatever with their friends and family as they make that transition. It is something I couldn’t see myself wanting to do.

 

People will use any and every excuse to throw a party and celebrate. People celebrate hurricanes.

 

What if the kid's trans, that's not a gender reveal, that's a genital reveal, but sure go ahead and celebrate that you're having a baby, that's nice. Just don't put people in danger doing extravagant stunts for your entertainment or chance to go viral. Whatever happened to popping a balloon or cutting a cake. The cameraperson didn't seem to even notice that the plane was going down

 

It is main character syndrome.

i was gonna say baby showers exist for this exact reason, gender reveals feel so unnecessary

 

It’s really all about attention. We’ve added engagement parties before weddings to celebrate two people deciding to marry before we do it again when they get married. Now we have the gender reveal on top of baby showers as a way to to get people to look at you as you find out the gender of your baby, as if most of your family and friends actually care what the gender is. It really is main character syndrome.

 

The pessimist in me says people also have/like gender reveal parties as way to try and get more gifts.

 

I would agree but have you seen the costs of hosting a party these days. It’s just attention they crave

I've seen some cute ones where the grandparents and stuff are thrilled and excited but a lot of them seem to enforce troubling gender norms, espesh when it's like "glitter or guitars?" Really boxing that kid in before its even born. I feel like it started kinda chill with cutting a cake with some blue frosting inside and then everyone had to one up each other.

 

Any excuse for cake is a valid excuse. Cake is also the perfect closer. No need to try to top cake.

 

It’s all marketing bullshit. Some marketer probably came up with the gender reveal party and ran with it.

 

Probably the same guy who came up with a big purple monster to market happy meals

Amen. My wife loves throwing me surprise birthday parties with all my friends, and while I'm grateful that she loves me enough to plan all that for me, sometimes (most times) I'd really rather just do absolutely nothing.

 

My best birthday party was a surprise party my wife planned for me. I keep wishing she would do another one, lol. Grass is always greener.

 

I don’t like birthday or holiday parties, but having a game night with good food is great once in a while
