Just picturing the Rick James sketch with the broken legs lol. Also Chris Rock being there with the “Was that Will?” line killed me.

I was like, did I miss something with Tom? There is no way this guy's arm is mangled.

    But alas.

The Depp trial coverage has been frustrating for a lot of reasons, but I've seen so many memes and posts on other sites calling Amber's attorney dumb for not knowing basic facts of the case when her attorney is just establishing facts of the case thru witness testimony like attorneys are supposed to do. If these ppl are grown adults I am alarmed. If they are kids i am still alarmed. I saw a tiktok where Johnny fans legit thought they uncovered new evidence of something based off amber and her attorneys behavior in the courtroom and were trying to get hold of Johnny's attorney and the judge to tell them about it. I don't even know that they're Johnny fans specifically so much as this is just their crusade rn.

I feel like no matter what the outcome is, Johnny has accomplished what he needed. He has so much positive public attention to keep his image in tact and they despise amber and I feel like this was his only real goal with all this anyway

I haven’t invested any time whatsoever in the Depp/Heard trial, so I won’t speak to that. However, the sheer volume of depp fanatics across the internet is astounding. As you said, he’s already won in the eyes of the general public. The whole thing’s just gross.

Tiktok detectives are going to get someone killed one of these days

It fascinates me how they admit their bias but still act like they have the absolute truth

I’ve been feeling this way since Serial was airing. Like, people on Reddit or any social media platform should not have influence in a REAL court case.

Tbh im not following the entire trial either because its like a full time job in itself. But It's so weird to me because he and his supporters are blaming amber for the demise of his reputation and hirability but tbh the way I remember it was the allegations he blew all his money on wine and reports on his irresponsible spending, his unprofessionalism on set, as well as his declining looks that painted him as more of a hasbeen. Of course this is anecdotal. I don't follow his career but I remember those headlines and him getting made fun of for that moreso than anything. They're out here acting like he was at his peak fame before she wrecked his image.

Yeah he was spending $30 k a month on wine and showing up high on set which makes him a liability

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, so I’d be happy to delete if need be.

From what I understand, both Depp and Heard are problematic, but it’s Heard who’s being humiliated through memes. Is this just another example of misogyny in society or something else? I’m bad at articulating this stuff. She could be an awful person, but she’s absolutely being ripped to shreds online and I don’t know how to feel about it.

people are incapable of understanding that relationships can be mutually toxic so it becomes a popularity contest , they think her being flawed makes him innocent and pure which it doesn't

Tbh I think it's sexism. Because even if she is as bad as they say she is (and like maybe she does suck, idk) they still conveniently ignore every evidence of Johnny's terrible behavior and have so many double standards. If she gives one "off" look they tear her to shreds because suddenly theyre all body language experts. But Johnny smirks and is disrespectful to Amber's attorney and they meme and laugh at how funny and witty he is. He can send a text saying he hopes her rotten corpse is decomposing in a car and they justify it because they agree she deserves it. Any bad or abusive thing he's done they say that he's the one suffering from reactive abuse and he was just a victim pushed too far who finally started to push back, but won't entertain the idea of that applying to her too.

They refuse to have any nuance and woobify him to oblivion and back. That in itself tells me all i need to know about their views on women.

Like can you imagine what they'd say if Amber smirked and was sassy on the stand? They'd say it was proof she wasn't abused because abuse victims wouldn't behave that way, or something equally damaging. But he does it and he's hilarious. I've seen people say she was obviously not abused because the tapes of her yelling at Johnny or whatever shows she wasn't fearful, but tapes of him yelling at her is just him taking back his power and being pushed to the edge. Why doesn't their own logic apply to him too? The hypocrisy of how men and women are viewed is blatant.

It wouldn't surprise me if decades from now we get thinkpieces about how sexist the coverage of this trial was and ppl will act like it was a sign of the times and we couldn't possibly know any better, just like they do when we find old interviews of like female popstars from the 90s being degraded and dehumanized.

This case is going to have negative ripple effects for years tbh

Not sure if this is a hot take or not, but (and ftr this isn't in reaction to anything ITT specifically): if a clever, relatively unknown celebrity with no record of being a troll posted a me too allegation/abuse story that went viral and blew up the news and social medias w/ tons of people agreeing no questions asked...and it was later revealed to be a fabrication, what would the impact of that be?

To elaborate: IF a claim like that was either falsified, later revealed as a stunt, or if nothing else not substantiated by enough evidence, and it became a media spectacle w/ a loud majority of feminist-identifying users on social media agreeing w/ the accusations no questions asked, but when the case was further investigated it ultimately left the accused looking the most wronged in the situation.... depending on how high profile the case was, what potential sociocultural impact might something like that have?

EDIT: fyi not trying to spark a debate or anything. no replies expected, just some food for thought (it was a question posed by our PR professor recently and most of the reactions in class were of silence and bewilderment too lol)

  24. The current culture is strange because, on one hand, post-#MeToo, there is a huge spotlight on abuse in a wide variety of industries (not just entertainment). On the other hand, it still happens all the time. So if a single case like that did happen, I don't know if it would have any impact on the current culture quite frankly. I mean, sure, it would give #notallmen types more ammunition to talk about why we shouldn't always believe women, but even with all of the current Depp vs. Heard bullshit, I don't think it's enough to roll back the fact that many more people are paying attention to abuse of power in their respective industries. But maybe I'm an optimist.
