Lamar having a way higher EPA versus two-high safeties just makes sense, his ability to run and the Ravens absolute RICHES at the TE position make it impossible for defenses to spread out like that without getting gashed. You basically have to come out in run stopping looks, take a LB and a safety out of coverage so you can chip a TE and spy Lamar, and pray your corners don't get beat vs the Ravens. Which all makes sense cause the WR position is their weak spot if they have one, so it's best to dedicate as many resources as possible to stopping Lamar from scrambling out of the pocket, stopping Henry tosses and stretch runs, and stopping TE's in deep seam / corner routes.

Essentially you wanna prevent runs from flanking you and prevent TE's from posting up on a smaller defender to limit the damage and to force Lamar to beat you staying in the pocket with patient underneath passing. And you want Lamar to "feel pressure" around him (not from one direction) and get claustrophobic in the pocket cause that's when he's prone to mistakes, but you do NOT want to blitz or take aggressive angles unless you can do it by surprise when the Ravens aren't expecting it, cause that's risking a 60+ yard run (from Lamar OR Henry) if you over-pursue. So pocket pushing, power DEs with great gap discipline are preferred to finesse rushers - even though you'd think the finesse guy would have a better chance at chasing Lamar or Henry down, the reality is that's not happening and it's already too late if you have to "chase". Keep them behind blockers, insulated from the open field, and you stand a much better chance.

And even then, a defense that plays great "contain" might still get owned if their IDL isn't good and the Ravens OL controls the game, cause Lamar and Henry can gash you up the middle too while your back 7 is worried about those damn TEs.

 

other presumptions i'd make don't match the data though:
-i'd think QBs with better arm talent would fare better against single-high, while QBs who rely more on anticipation would fare better against two-high. That logic predicts Joe Burrow (more anticipation), Patrick Mahomes (better arm talent), & Gardner Minshew (worse arm talent) .. but then there's conflicting info, like CJ Stroud who is normally an anticipation guy being next to Mahomes, Derek Carr being ahead of both in single-high EPA despite having a worse arm than both, and Anthony Richardson struggling against man-heavy cover 1 looks despite the fact that guys with a Super Arm like that almost exclusively tend to be better vs man.

but the points I made about Lamar do seem to match up because other very-mobile QBs are generally doing better vs 2-high than QBs with normal mobility. Cover 2, Cover 4 & Cover 6 are great at naturally erasing more routes than Cover 0, Cover 1 & Cover 3 - you don't need as much back-end talent to stop the pass in those alignments, and a QB's timing and arc control has to be way better to pass the ball through it. But they put much more open-space responsibility on your linebackers and they effectively handicap your ability to deal with scrambling QBs and great rushing attacks. A Lamar Jackson can move linebackers and safeties around like puppets in Cover 2, and create favorable angles for otherwise not-open receivers, by scrambling around and forcing them to react to his every move.

 

if i could make guesses:
-Stroud's WR talent is the reason why he's doing better vs single-high, it's tough to man-up the Texans WRs, probably easier to confuse a slumping year 2 QB with safeties in deep zone even though he has shown expert level anticipation to break through that at times. This may also be true for Baker Mayfield to some extent.
-Anthony Richardson's accuracy / ball placement is just THAT bad that even though he has the velocity to throw covered guys open, he's overall less bad when he can throw into a wider window and the WR can slow down to track the ball if he has to
-Derek Carr's getting an absurdly inflated EPA against single high looks because of how many times Shaheed burns people deep + how many damn YAC Kamara gets on these little dumpoff passes, and these are exactly the the things you'd call if you're seeing a lot of single-high man or match coverage.

but these are all just hypotheses, don't claim to know objectively how it actually works, fun to think about though
