It’s not. If a defender leaves certain areas of the field, you stop covering them. The difference is “man match” is divided by route type while zone match is more explicitly divided by sections of the field such as “sideline to the hash 15 yards deep” rather than “if he runs a slant you pass that route to the coverage help”

That's man coverage. It's called man coverage. It's classified as man coverage. People in the NFL call it man coverage. It is counted as man coverage. It's then sent back to the teams that RAN THE COVERAGE for confirmation. This is not just some fantasy football nerd watching the game broadcast, it is literal professionals trained by former NFL position players and coaches who then send this data to the people who ran these coverages for fact checking.

 

You are both in the wrong and it gets like this every single time, it doesn’t matter which one starts it, we literally end up in the same place every time. I know you guys are friends but when it comes to these arguments these too much of a comfortability that ends up making it a little too uncomfortable to witness each time and it’s a bummer.

 

The individual diagnosing may not know the team's rules but they can certainly tell which match concept is being implemented

It functionally is not man, and would be attacked much more like zone than man. The criticisms of man coverage do not apply to man match either. it legitimately doesn’t make sense to treat it like man. In “man match” the corner does not follow the defender UNLESS they stay in their area of the field. By all intents and purposes that is zone

I’m not saying that people need to research a sport if they’re into it but that research is out there and readily available. My issue with stats analysis comes when it’s not cross referenced with the context of actual game strategy so that’s why I tend to add that context when I can. It’s fine if Matt doesn’t agree but what I don’t like is the attitude that I’m just pulling it out of my ass instead of having done a LOT of reading on how NFL strategy works
