It’ll be interesting if any other owners start taking the Seidler route. But he’s also unique in beating cancer twice already. Probably already has funds to leave family behind with.

Either way it’s just proving that billionaires can actually spend money on players.

Spending money you actually have and not running an sports team as an Avenue to make a big profit.

i mean.....the padres did not invent spending money lol

we just had the offseason of steve cohen, plenty of other teams shelled out big money for players. i get and agree with your overall sentiment of "billionaires need to spend money on the team" but it just comes off weird to be like i wonder if more teams will be like the padres lol

But it IS different when it’s bucking the trend of it being a “small market team” and not “every team can spend like NY, BOS, LA”.

Fair point, i guess I've never actually looked at SD as a small market in that sense

  15. Given the comments that multiple ownership groups have made complaining how about how Peter Seidler invests in the club I think it’s fair to say “no” this is definitely not going to be a trend

Which sucks but hey enjoy it. I don’t know this for sure but I’d guess that the current Padres probably have the highest payroll, even inflation adjusted, by a team in the bottom third by market size ever

They were also a team that collected profit sharing or whatever its called into being one of the teams cutting those checks.

Landlocked by Arizona, the border, and the LA/OC market.

  18. I’d actually guess (correct me if I’m wrong) that the Padres still net a positive number from revenue sharing just because I doubt their local TV deal is top-half valuable, despite good attendance and the benefit of higher real estate valuations due to being in CA. Believe my Cardinals net revenue sharing money every year despite elite attendance and a really valuable local TV deal and essentially no losing seasons. That whole system is broken obviously
