Tavern is my go-to if I have to mention a bar in a comedic way

 

It sort of is! I mean isn’t a pub in England / Ireland generally a place you’d go to get authentic, traditional English / Irish food? That’s the context with which I’m looking at it. I call places that have excellent American street food / greasy food pubs. Some bars treat food as an afterthought and I don’t usually enjoy those as much cause I don’t like getting super drunk. If there’s good ass food I’m more likely to be a regular and hang out there longer

In his 17th-century diary, Samuel Pepys described the pub as "the heart of England".[8]

Although the drinks traditionally served include draught beer and cider, most also sell wine, spirits, tea, coffee, and soft drinks. Many pubs offer meals and snacks, and so-called gastro-pubs serve food in a manner akin to a restaurant.

A licence is required to operate a pub and the licensee is known as the landlord or landlady, or the publican. Often colloquially referred to as their "local" by regular customers,[9] pubs are typically chosen for their proximity to home or work, good food, social atmosphere, the presence of friends and acquaintances, and the availability of pub games such as darts or snooker. Pubs often screen sporting events, such as rugby and football. The pub quiz was established in the UK in the 1970s.

So based on this what I really mean is “gastropub” but I hate that term

and usually places that have to say “gastropub” in their name, have really ambitious food that sucks and makes you wish they just had regular bar food lol

My favorite bar/food spot in town calls itself a “taproom & eatery,” which always tickles me a little bit
