Randall I think everyone's point was you shouldn't run red lights, not that we should drive more cars and ride less bikes

i agree with randall for the most part about biking but there is a level of arrogance to bikers that you simply don't get from car drivers. just because your bike can fit between two cars doesn't mean you have to squeeze between them. you can simply abide by the same rules as everyone else.

but yeah, bikers shouldn't be put in danger just because car drivers aren't paying attention

I very much agree with that. Mine, and a lot of others counter points was, bicyclist shouldn’t also willingly put themselves and others in danger by breaking a host of laws because they feel like they don’t apply to them, while also complaining that they don’t get treated like a member of the road.

Americans in general, not just you, aren't willing to sacrifice beliefs that are convenient to their sense of individuality, for the sake of the greater good. In this country, that sense of individuality is inextricably linked to convenience driving a vehicle since there ain't no other easy way to get around. In simpler terms, Americans aren't willing to accept any inconvenience to their driving commute in order to accommodate transportation forms that are less wasteful and detrimental to the environment.

This is a problem that affects car drivers AND bikers, but car drivers being in a higher financial class than bike riders obviously get favored in the discussion and spend most their time blaming the bikers instead of archaic laws and infrastructure - when it should be the other way around, and the urgent, scientifically proven need to reduce the amount of vehicles on the road should be the crux of the discussion, favoring making bike infrastructure more friendly. Instead of favoring people who can afford a car for every household, they should favor cyclist opinions of the road a little more, so they don't have to compete with vehicles or follow vehicular laws that don't make sense for them.

This is no different from a litany of other issues where American tradition trumps modern innovation and those in a higher tax bracket get the benefit of the doubt while those in the lower class get blamed and shit on.

Americans are even worse than that. They won’t invest in things that will be better for everyone including themselves because they think they’ll be one of the lucky rich people or their politics actually revolves around making sure other people have it worse than them.

like y'all can miss me with a discussion about laws in a country where the FDA allows carcinogen pesticides in our food and where weed smokers were treated like fentanyl dealers for 50 years. Sorry. a lot of laws in this country are outdated and stupid. Josh Griddy dating a 16 year old in Oklahoma is technically legal and he will face no punishment for it.

My god the mental gymnastics to turn "you shouldn't run red lights" into "statutory rape is legal too!"

it's not fucking mental gymnastics. It's an example of why legal discussions have absolutely nothing to do with morality. I can come up with 100 more examples that aren't related in a granular sense but are related to the overall concept of using laws as the kingpin of discussions like this.

me breaking a minor law that doesn't make any sense (which every single person in this fucking thread does every time they drive home from a bar cause "They only had 2 beers") is not automatically equated to me endangering people and being reckless
