This part is why I just wouldn’t engage them haha. Because if the band came up in conversation I would be honest about why I don’t listen to them at all anymore

Yeah, that's super fair. I honestly don't even remember many of the details of the JL stuff, so I don't even think I could have a meaningful conversation about it.

I used to be a big Brand New guy and thought they were good the few times I’ve seen them

My hottest take might be that I thought The Gaslight Anthem was dogshit when I saw them live in 2014. I’ll give ‘em a pass because their drummer had a family emergency that day and the drummer from Against Me had to fill in, but half their set was full bad and half of it was acoustic and it was just such a strange set that I was completely taken out of the experience

BN was maybe my favorite band going for a few years, admittedly still struggle with what my relationship with their music is these days, was not super easy to just cold turkey their stuff for a while.

This was how I felt about seeing Snail Mail recently. I mean she restarted 6 or 7 songs because she couldn’t hear out of her in-ear monitors, and it was awkward as fuck, especially because some of those songs sounded fine and if she just trusted herself, she was playing and singing well.

Personally, I am very used to not hearing myself well live and having to trust my instincts / the few things I can clearly hear. So it was odd to me a professional musician would rather make her crowd uncomfortable and suck the air out of the building for 40+ minutes than just power through it and play the songs like she’s in someone’s living room. The band finally got it together for the last 30 or so minutes of the set but the first hour was the most uncomfortable I’ve ever been at a show, watching her stop songs and try to fill the space with bad banter and over explaining / over apologizing etc. Even the band members were clearly cringing every time she would wave them to stop the song when everything seemed fine

It was the first day of Valentine Fest in Baltimore, I still bought her awesome new vinyl record, and the rest of those days apparently she played awesome so I just caught them at their worst. Thankfully I also got to see Mannequin Pussy and they put on a DOMINANT performance so I still got my moneys worth.

I very very rarely listen to BN anymore if ever. Like maybe something will come on shuffle and I'll listen but I'm not hitting play on a whole album

    The rivalry is back on

this is a common theme with her live show, unfortunately

I saw her open for Beach Fossils a couple years back and it was a similarly uncomfortable 40 minutes

Really? Damn. I mean she is really young, maybe that will change and she’ll become a more confident performer. It’s just tough to reconcile that and being a big fan of her studio albums

I think one of the more disappointing sets I’ve seen in recent memory was This Will Destroy You in 2019. They were great up until they must have been experiencing technical difficulties toward the end of their set. If you’re familiar with them, you don’t they incorporate a lot of drone and ambient influence in their style of post rock and everyone must have stood there for about 10-15 minutes listening to droning ambience before they cut the song it was leading up to and the last couple they were going to play in favor of playing their most popular song and then came out for an encore laying a few cut from their first release

It was a bummer because it definitely killed the vibe and I was looking forward to seeing the newer songs that unfortunately got seemingly cut from the set

I thought BN was really good live. I agree the vocals are off key a lot but the energy was really good, they just had a fun atmosphere. I’ve seen Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine open for them though and both sounded better. Of course I’m completely off BN since it came to light how horrible Jesse is but man they were a big part of my music during some important years.

The most disappointing live show I’ve seen was the Pixies just a few years ago. One of my all time favorite bands and I was so pumped to see them and they just seemed like they were phoning it in. They aren’t the worst though that still goes to either Taking Back Sunday or Smashmouth but I expected those to kind of suck

My god, is Taking Back Sunday a bad live band lol.

If there’s one thing I can say about recent pop-punk/emo versus early 2000s pop-punk/emo it’s that the recent bands are way more consistent at being good live

I’m not a Wonder Years fan but damn can they play circles around most of the pop punk bands I did grow up on, in terms of performance

You know who blew my brains out onto the concrete when I saw them live

    PIANOS BECOME THE TEETH

fucking incredible. They are exactly what I want out of a moody, progressive emo / post-hardcore band. (Their vibe is actually pretty close to about 50% of what I go for with my electric guitar music). Top to bottom excellent job of everyone filling their role and adding something crucial to the music.

Their drummer is a machine, and their guitarists know how to actually control noise and drones and feedback so that every song shapeshifts into the next song and has clear changes in volume and intensity.

The singer for One Ok Rock is also a great live singer.

I fortunately have very rarely (maybe never?) had the experience of going to a headliner at a club show and actively disliking their live show. Some have been kinda mid (PVRIS and Anberlin are two that come to mind), but still enjoyable. The shows that would make up a non-existent bottom 5 or bottom 10 list of shows I’ve seen would be exclusively festival sets or openers.
