well I can tell you what they TRIED to do

It’s a fake RPO. You pretend to hand off to the back, and then you fool the DBs that you’re gonna pass outside or that Justin Fields is gonna run, all to actually just throw it back to the runningback over the middle. Basically the inverse of a flea flicker. You’re hoping the safety got confused and forgot about the RB after the fake handoff.

However, to actually make one of these work you gotta run block, not pass block. You can’t just tell Justin Fields “okay you just gotta beat that edge defender one on one”. When the DE sees a pass blocking set, that erases his need to read the RB, and his whole “set the edge” responsibility becomes to not let Justin Fields scramble.

On a regular pass play the offensive tackle can get in his way, but this play design has Justin Fields do an immediate sprint outside the pocket, which doesn’t give the offensive lineman an opportunity to “catch” the defensive lineman before Fields scrambles. Normally for an RPO you’d at least want to sell the run with actual run blocking to open up the pass and freeze that edge defender. (rather than pass block for a pocket that Fields isn’t even in).

And if you’re gonna pass block for a naked bootleg, then it’s traditional at least have 1) a TE or guard pulling on Fields side to protect him from a wide pass rusher or a corner blitz 2) another TE or back running a short checkdown route in case a defender still ends up in his face.

This Bears play call takes forever to develop, has blocking that doesn’t match the goal of the play, uses Kmet as a weak decoy rather than as a backside blocker or checkdown option, and leaves Fields wide open without any contingency to freeze the defensive line or to get the ball out of his hands faster. So while I get the POINT of the play more than the guy in this video does - the RB actually was open if Fields had any time to throw it - it’s just not designed in a way that would work in the fast paced NFL. DE’s are way too smart and way too fast to get out-ran on the edge like that without anything to distract them.

It’s simple math - A diagonal hypotenuse is shorter than a straight line, so because of the angle, a good DE is gonna beat even an athletic QB like Fields to the corner every time if he sees him running immediately while the T steps back into a pass blocking stance.

 

I’m not a betting man but goddamn do I wish I could go back in time and put money on GB having a better record this year than Chicago. I think for awhile there were even odds or whatever the terms are for them to have the same record or even Chicago having a better record than GB which was always insanity. I would have put so much money on GB having a better record this year, easiest money to be made imo.
