lol i kept thinking this as well. every time a kid was picked they were like "as an MLB comparison i see a lot of Ken Griffey" or "he really has the same build and ability as a (insert legendary HOF player)" but then in the next breath they'll be like "but he's really not a great hitter".

Agreed. I have no clue whether my team had a good draft or not and won’t know until at least 6 years from now. I laugh at people going crazy one way or the other on their teams draft.

 

having a good draft is about process not results. results are mostly determined by 1) luck 2) strength of an org's player dev machine, but if you have a good process you can cut down on the luck factor ever so slightly. so imo understanding whether an early-round pick is "good" requires understanding where they could fit in that team's system/long-term plans and the team's reasons for selecting the player/general draft philosophy.

which makes it much harder to follow than other sports' drafts. e.g. it's not like the nba where you either think chet holmgren is a lock to be a top-5 player regardless of which team takes him or he's a bust on stork legs waiting to happen, and you basically find out who was more right 12 months later.

 

Still funny to me (but understandable considering their luck) that the Angels drafted 100% pitchers last year
