Big 10 tourney will prolly be cancelled with what happened with Fred hoiberg and him being taken to the hospital

With what happened with the NBA tonight, I'll be surprised if there is any more college basketball games after tonight.

Well they planned going fanless starting tomorrow so they could still do that

Fans weren't even the problem, one player getting it can create a huge chain of exposure. Idk I'm pessimistic. Maybe the conference tourneys happen but I'm doubtful of past that

They could, but the NBA supposedly planned on doing that too. With the publicity this is getting, and the escalation this has seen so far, it's hard for me to see it going on period. If unsafe for professional athletes, and colllege students on campus, this is probably how it has to go down

all the tourneys are. i wouldn't be surprised if they get cancelled after tonight or they play them and then the ncaa tourney gets canned

Were going from 0 to 1000 just way too quickly here in my opinion.

No way the ncaa tourney goes on. Cancel the tourneys.

Also who the fuck let Fred hoiberg coach that game. If he showed up to any job looking like that they would send him home. In what is happening today? Gross negligence and incompetence.

Not sure what the harm of playing in empty arenas is though? Surely we cant be just closing down every business in the entire country. Its impossible

Considering an NBA player has the disease, the chances are that someone between staff, refs, media and players could have it. With over 300 teams in the NCAA that includes probably some 6-8 thousand people. The possibility of infection spreading between players even in an empty is too high to risk.

Because America has very few tests available so the number of cases in America is far higher than it is, an NBA player already has it (more likely to also have it) and why should kids NOT making money go do their “job” when theres a pandemic that’s forcing the greediest of greedy corporations to cancel events. At some point humanity outpaces sports. I’ll miss the ncaa tourney, for sure. But I’ll miss my 70 year old parents more if they contract this and then die because precautions weren’t taken.

All that aside, the nba set the bar on this. How are the optics for the ncaa — who already get crushed for exploiting athletes the ways they do — when they force kids to play these games while actual professional basketball players don’t.

edit: to expand, I don’t think people fully grasp how easy it is to spread. Colorado at last check has 33 confirmed cases, 9 of which are traced back to one person from Australia who was visiting Colorado. Now, apply that to, say, an arena of 250 people (big 12 was proposing 125 tickets per team, right? I thought I saw that, someone correct me if I’m wrong), and it spirals out of control even further.

but the idea right now is to limit events with LOTS of people in it right? If we shut down schools, sporting events, i mean... do we close down all malls, stores, restaurants? That's just not possible.

We can catch the virus anywhere no?

but i guess my question is where is the limit and where do we stop in terms of "containing the disease'?

personally if they really want to stop the spread and contain it as much as possible they should put the entire country in lockdown and shut everything down except essential things staying open for 2-3 weeks

Those people still have to travel. If 100-200 people are in an arena, how do you think they got there? From all across the country bringing with them whatever they have disease wise (or even having allergies and lowering your immune system making them susceptible to contracting something). In the course of their travels how many people will they be exposed to? TSA agents, pilots, flight attendants, hotel workers, bus drivers, local food/service employees all both on the way there and back.

the real question is: why do you think an athletic competition featuring unpaid athletes is more important then taking precautions against a global pandemic? Michigan is under a state of emergency and citizens are implored to only travel if absolutely necessary.

Bingo. Failure to properly take precautions lands you where Italy is: everything is shut down except health centers and grocery stores. The whole country.

  24. See: Italy

As to why most things are about to be shut down (as many as humanly possible). The NBA has suspended their season, the G-League, the UFC is probably going to cancel MMA events, WWE is likely going to have to can their biggest event of the year. It would look absolutely awful if the NCAA didn't follow suit.

yeah but its way worse over there. if they dont want the same to happen here they should do that here now! theres like 1200 cases in the states and its only gonna get worse
