  1. I'd tell myself anything to sleep better at night having lost one of the best baseball players of his generation.

But, really, Boston messed up and it's ok to live with that too. Even if it's by pushing the relationship to the point where he didn't want to play in Boston anymore (really though $ fixes that). Still on them it got to that point. And it's still one of the biggest colossal fuckups in our lifetime of baseball history.

If it was a small market team, sure, I get that it would be hard to keep Betts from leaving for a big market

...but it was the Red Sox. They fucked that relationship up to get to that point. That doesn't just happen overnight.

They offered Betts the 2nd highest contract in baseball after Trout. He said no and didn’t even counter. He turned down contract every year since his call up. Not sure how that’s the Red Sox fault unless you think they should have offered him more than Trout. Not every problem is solved by just offering more money.

Betts is the girl that didn't love you back. Sometimes there's nothing you can do to get them to stay.
If it was any other caliber player, the blame wouldn't be so heavily placed on the organization.

I'm not saying money was the only issue. The Red Sox clearly screwed that relationship up with him to make it much harder to re-sign him. It's clear there were problems. The Red Sox were so cheap they took what should've been their franchise player to arbitration over $3 million. He called it a "very valid question" on if he would've stayed with the Sox if they had offered the same contract the Dodgers did.

The owners also wanted to get under the luxury tax, and did so at the cost of a franchise player.

I remember growing up and arguing about the weirdest fucking players because I barely understood baseball and Todd Helton was always like the GOAT to me for some reason.

Next baseball question from my childhood: Who was better, Mike "A Slice Of" Piazza or Ivan Rodriguez?

Yup the arbitration thing is/was clearly stupid, thanks for bringing that up. I always hate it when a player on the Sox going into arbitration, there's never going to be anything good to come out of it, just a lot of hurt feelings on both sides.

Again about the luxury tax thing, yes the Sox were trying to get under the tax however ownership stated numerous times both before and after he was traded that they would be willing to signing Mookie to a long term deal even if it meant that they went over.

I will say it seems like Mookie is embracing being a celebrity in LA much more than when he was in Boston, he's doing GQ magazine covers, promoting video games etc. Perhaps he was just never comfortable in Boston for whatever reason. Either way good for him, he's a good guy, who never caused any problems or issues and should be someone the MLB is marketing the sport around.

I think Pudge was better all-around, he kinda went under the radar as just so reliable for so long, just like Yadi is these days.

Young me preferred Piazza though, he was a more "exciting" watch.

pudge was the better backstop, piazza was the better hitter.
    overall, i'd take pudge.

pudge, randy, beltran, berkman, gary sheffield, kenny lofton, bobby abreu...I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting

Loved Berkman on the Cards. And then he followed the path into unrepentant transphobia. So gross.
