The Suns max for Ayton could have been way more $ for an additional year. They saved money by allowing another team to offer Ayton the max. Quite literally the benefit a franchise has with RFA’s.

OKC Thunder, city officials begin discussing plans for new NBA arena

Absolutely wild to think they deserve (let alone NEED) a new arena already (which obviously wouldn't likely be ready for another 3-6 years, but, still).

 

What makes you say that? I'm not necessarily disagreeing but just wondering. The current arena is 20 years old so by the time a new one is built it would be 23-26 years old

 

There's 20 other arenas older than it (one of which is shared by the LA teams). Out of 29 arenas overall. Not really even close to being old, especially with the updates they've done over the years. It's a great location too, with Bricktown literally right outside the arena that has phenomenal nightlife during/after games.

Only new arena coming is for the Clippers, and that's still a few years away.

I just don't want taxpayer money going towards a completely unnecessary arena for OK taxpayers such as myself.

 

I hadn't thought about the age of other arenas around the league but I'm not sure that matters.

I'm an OKC resident myself (15 minutes from Bricktown) and it isn't like our tax money does much good anywhere else in the state so why not get a shiny new arena? As it stands it isn't like we'll ever host an All Star game

In general though I do agree, citizens shouldn't have to help fund sports arenas under threat of relocation from teams.

But that's how it seems to work

 

Target center is like 30 years old, before it had its recent updates I’m fairly certain it was deemed unacceptable for a nba team lmao

 

I don’t wish for anyone to lose their team but the thought of OKC threatening to relocate to Seattle is kinda funny

 

I 100% agree and will also be so sad if it happens
