I think that's a fair pivot, and I'd take the ring every single day.

I'd rather have a Calvin Johnson career than a David Tyree career

From a players perspective I think they no doubt would rather have a ring, but I also don't think rings really should determine anything.

I'd rather be in the Hall tbh. Danny Etling has a ring. Dan Marino is in the Hall. Both are huge accomplishments but one isnt gonna end up personal trivia told to me by my dentist or some shit.

Idk I'd rather be a good player whose high level of play is a reason my team won a ring than a great player who never won one.

I think that's different than the Etling-Marino comparison obviously, or even the Tyree-Megatron comparison. I'd wanna be the latter in both situations. More like...Julian Edelman vs Julio Jones.

For what it's worth I wasn't disagreeing with most of @EntryLevelDave's assessment, of course rings matter, but the idea that the 16-0 Pats are a failure of a team is maybe technically correct, but not a reason to dismiss them (or other all-time great teams who didn't win Super Bowls) from the pantheon of elite, all-time teams. I was responding to the Jared Goff tweet/general discussion about rings, not Dave specifically. I think they're overvalued in these types of conversations. The '90s Braves were amazing. The 18-1 Pats were amazing.

When you hit a mothafucka, you hit that mothafucka Prestigious

I just think the odds clearly point to your team not winning and having to get really lucky to win. So it’s senseless to hang on superbowls as the only cathartic satisfaction possible in a sports season.

Literally you said this verbatim and it’s why I got kinda defensive:

A *fan of the team* is going to remember everything and cherish the good moments, obviously? Does it matter if anyone else remembers the Jags were good in the late 90s since they didn’t go to a SB? No, but it’s something I will always look back on fondly and you seemed to suggest that that’s bullshit.

Maybe you didn’t intend that but you do have this air of “whoa whoa, calm down, my team ACTUALLY wins” about you — I know it’s usually a joke but it’s so consistently your attitude in these discussions that it becomes a tired, offputting shtick after awhile. Which is why I used the word pretentious. You are really changing your tone and saying things in a much more congenial way now that you have become frustrated with this topic.

    You also said this:

And it prompted me to realize that the opposite is also true. Even if a SB win is the ultimate snapshot of CURRENT success... No one cares one year later if you win or don’t win a Super Bowl because every year is a new year with new potential. Lots of teams win the SB and then promptly take a nose dive and then it no longer even adds anything relevant to the context.

Wouldn’t it get annoying if a someone kept fucking saying “yeah, but they won that SB back in 2003!!!” Every time we criticized a move the Bucs made? It’s equally annoying when you say “yeah, but thats not gonna help the Cowboys win a SB” every time we praise them locking up their young talent. If I can simplify this... legit who even cares what’s happened in the past when we’re discussing this year’s potential?

I think right here I just disagree with you. And this will expound on my last point.

I had a Patriots fan roommate that year in college. First day he moved in he asked what my team was, I said Jags, he said “oh... you like any WINNING teams?” And that year I proceeded to sit through the Pats stomping on teams I liked the whole year (they were always on prime time TV, our room was small and we had one TV, I’m not gonna tell my roommate to turn off his team.)

You think all that resentment and all those memories of my smug ass roommate just went away when they lost the Super Bowl? No because regardless I knew at that point they had become dominant and this was going to keep happening and making me salty every NFL season. I still hated every minute of that game that they beat the Ravens by 3 despite the Ravens playing great defense, after getting like 6-7 iffy ref calls their way. They still won 16 out of 16 times over the course of 4 months.

This is why I don’t agree that the SB is the only measurement of success. I don’t see the 2007 patriots as failures for that. I overall looked at the Patriots at the time as being SO successful that it’s frustrating. The Super Bowl loss did not change that perception.

Honestly if the Browns make the playoffs and get bounced I see that as a success because it’s been over 20 years. So we just stand widely apart on this topic. I think there’s a nuance to it - being a winning team makes you a moderately successful team even if you’re not close to the most successful team. Turning a losing team around and making them competitive is a level of success for me. It doesn’t have to be the whole pie to still be a delicious piece of pie.

I am very fast lol. But usually it’s something I think about like 1-2 seconds right after I posted, or sometimes it’s just rewording / better organizing what I said because I am scatterbrained. But I don’t go ever back later and retro-edit in that “coward” way just because people didn’t like what I said.

If you assert that anything else is a failure though, it sounds like you’re not leaving room for fans of less dominant teams to be happy with different modicums of relative “success”. Even if it’s not your intent, you carry a tone that sounds really condescending towards people with a lower threshold of satisfaction in sports. And I can’t help that it rubs me the wrong way because yeah, not every team can be the Patriots and we all hate losing to that team... but why you gotta rub it in by saying shit like “winning the SB is the only thing that REALLY matters”? that’s just a tone deaf thing to say in a community of fans of all different teams, losing teams included. Most our teams haven’t won a SB in our entire lives. To me at least, that doesn’t mean EVERY Jags season was a failure. Some of them made me a lot more happy than sad.
