Also now that I think of it, trading an existing player who has proven what kind of player he is is much different than trading picks which are used on players who's never played a down. It's not a comparable situation, imo

Okay but thats not correct. How you want to judge something doesnt change what actually is and you have several people telling you you are wrong so maybe open up to the possibility that you can be wrong

I think it's still at least somewhat comparable. The Eagles knew they were getting Wentz who had promise to play in Philly, the Cowboys knew they were getting Amari Cooper who was coming off a down season but had potential. I don't think it's a perfect 1:1 comparison but I think there's a hint of uncertainty in the Cooper trade that makes it fair.

    The rivalry is back on

    I think we’re in agreement.

This looks like a win for Dallas because if everything goes like it is now, they will get more out of Cooper than they would have from your average first round WR

Let’s have 2 alternate scenarios for what happens next:

    1) Oakland drafts AJ Brown with the Dallas pick and he’s a stud. 4 years from now, he’s in the conversation for best WR in the NFL. Oakland wins because they got a stud WR and cashed in someone they would have let go for a building block. Dallas wins because they got more value than the average first round WR and had no way of knowing Brown would pan out. Maybe he wouldn’t have on Dallas.

    2) Jon Gruden is a dunce and picks Hollywood Brown because he likes when guys run fast. Hollywood Brown busts. Oakland loses. Lol Oakland. Good idea in theory that does not pan out, but would probably do it again. Dallas wins because they got more value than the average first round WR and had no way of knowing Hollywood Brown would bust.

Huh? A known commodity who has played 2+ seasons in the NFL at a high level is much more certain of a player than a rookie who's never played a snap, regardless of how well they did in college, Wentz still could have been a complete bust. Like, look at Ryan Leaf.

I'm not going to continue going in circles because we clearly have different views of it which is totally fine, and I do understand the thinking in once the trade is completed that's it, full stop, I just don't agree lol

    I have love 4 u all

I just don’t get why it’s bad that I ignore the theoretical value of a draft pick once the practical reality emerges. Like at that point what teams “projected” that pick’s value to be doesn’t matter.

That trade was only a good trade for summer 2016. My opinion on that changed when I had the FULL results to reflect on. It’s not that backward of an opinion. The practical results matter, the theoretical value doesn’t after draft season is over... so I am understandably dismissive of the latter

This is the last time I'll say this part: I think the players-to-players comparison only works if we know EXACTLY who each team would've taken with that trade. If AJ Brown turns out to be 1000% better than Amari Cooper, that doesn't necessarily mean that the Cowboys lose the trade because what if they were going to draft Marquise Brown with that pick? Likewise what if Cleveland was going to draft Eli Apple with #2?

Yeah, I agree that it's not a 1:1 comparison and understood that point of your post, but you pointed out that Cooper had more uncertainty than a player who hasn't even played yet. That was just the line of thought I didn't agree with.

Oh no I did not point out that Cooper had MORE uncertainty. I pointed out that he had a hint of uncertainty and wasn't a guarantee to produce in Dallas. Which is similar (ALBEIT NOT THE EXACT SAME AS DRAFT PICKS ARE RISKIER) to a rookie coming onto a new team.

yeah I indeed do not understand why it’s so controversial to want to focus on practical results and not try to revisit outdated context that doesn’t exist anymore

Because thats not what the actual TRADE was.

You're totally right, I misunderstood and thought you were implying that he had uncertainty and a rookie doesn't.
