Problem with this theory is it assumes the Redskins want the cap savings in 2019 to be aggressive in free agency...but the timing is all off. If the Redskins trade him after June 1, then they save like $15mil on this years cap. Anything before, he actually costs about $1mil more than if he just sat and did nothing.

The Osweiler deal worked because his signing bonus was small and his guaranteed salary was large. Smith's probably still a year away from being such a similar situation...but even then, a June 1 release is probably better than giving up a 2nd rounder.
