I've been thinking about this all day, and if the Sixers have to lose Butler, I don't think I'd mind them getting Winslow and Richardson and their corresponding contracts in a sign-and-trade, rather than whatever the Rockets would offer. If I have the numbers right, Philly would still have more than $40 million in cap room + the MLE, too. Conceivably, they could still sign Harris & Redick and should be able to fill the other roster spots without a problem, including the all-important backup center for Embiid. Simmons/Redick/Richardson/Harris/Embiid would be a pretty great starting five, and I'd like Winslow as the backup PG, as well as someone who could play alongside Simmons.

To make the trade work, I think the Heat would have to lose a third guy to another team if Base Year Compensation is triggered, much like the Rockets' situation with the Sixers. The whole thing wouldn't exactly make the Heat contenders this year, so they'd have to sell Butler on a multi-year plan since Dragic/Whiteside/Anderson ($67 million total) all come off the books next offseason. They also don't have a single contract right now for 2021-22.

 

Heat can’t trade first round picks until like 2023 and it’ll be tough to get any picks for those bad contracts.

I think Philly gives him that 5th year and he takes it

 

Truly no reason why the Sixers shouldn't be throwing that 5th year at Jimmy for what they've given up for him/Tobias. If that is all it's taking to get him back, none of the meetings with other teams even happen and he's a Sixer at 6pm tomorrow.

 

I can almost guarantee that contract is going to be terrible lol
