for a team as young as they are i'm a surprised a top 6 pick didn't make it.

 

Zadina didn't look ready. He's a goal scorer. We're going to be bad and there's no need to possibly hurt his confidence because he won't be putting the puck in the net like he wants to.

He'll certainly play this season though.

I'm not too surprised. He didn't look ready just yet. Gives some of the other younger guys a chance to play instead. He'll be one of the first call-ups when injuries hit.

 

still very much learning the game - how do you / the team know (or think you know) when someone is ready? is it a mix of things such as size and production in AHL/college/other? over the last few months it seems like most draftees / young players have had universal reactions by folks for being ready or not, but being still so new to the game i don't know what that means or what they're looking at that makes them reach that determination.

for example: Jack Hughes, the apparent universal #1 2019 pick. would he play game 1 of the 2019 season?

Most picks between 1-5 play in the NHL their first season. Most players drafted never even see NHL ice. There's only a few roster spots per team so most players will need to prove they can play in the NHL by dominating in the minors, junior or make a good impression by producing well when called up for a game to replace someone who's injured or not producing. Some players drafted have the skill but need to put on some weight before getting a shot at the line up. A lot of things need to fall into place to make it.
