Eh, i only used Bortles as a comparison. Mainly I don't value Mayfield as a top fiver and Matt does.

2015 when Bortles appeared to have competence was really fun because everyone told me how drafting Clowney over Bortles was a massive mistake

Haha at the time I felt like it was too but I honestly think it worked out. We had Mercilus, drafted McKinney and Cunningham, and stumbled into Dylan Cole somehow. I think having Clowney works out when we ended up getting those 3 plus had Mercilus. And I love Clowney's play so much. But god I wanted Mack.

I don't like comparing em though, I don't like the Clowney's better or Mack's better debate. My opinion is that Mack is better at his pure position and Clowney is more flexible. But I'd rather look at it as "Holy hell these 2 amazing defensive players were in this draft".

 

Mayfield doesn't go through reads, anticipate, make quick deicisions nor does he incorporate dropback timing into his game. He's also not precise about planting his feet or staying in the pocket or throwing from the best vantage point. He's not as advanced as you think. You can't always base it off "well he didn't throw that many picks" because neither did Bortles in college! haha

 

I have come to the conclusion after six or so pages of mayfield talk...

Mayfield goes through some reads, just not ideally. He ABSOLUTELY makes quick decisions. You're looking at things he does poorly sometimes or inconsistently and thinking that's who he is when you already had your mind made up about him before you even scouted him (I know this because when the year started and I said Mayfield you were heavily against it because of the idea you had of Rosen).

He's more accurate than Bortles was in college. Mayfield is also a leader and a good presence. Bortles is neither.

 

Manziel had problems even before the Browns. They didn't fuck him up at all. He was developed for most of his rookie year behind Hoyer, didn't start until December, and his offensive coordinator in his rookie year was Kyle Shanahan. He really blew it personally, but much of it was already there before the Browns tried to help him develop.

Regardless, we'd already said we weren't accusing Mayfield of having those problems. He does have a bit of an ego, but the rest is just on his play style and performance. I'm not saying he's horrible and take him off the board, but I would never take him #1, let alone top 5.

I definitely agree here. Everyone complains about Sam Darnold's footwork, yet I think Mayfield's even worse. He's just erratic in the pocket by usually going toward the rush or running and trying to make a play. Just look at the college playoff when he had a 22-yard run, but finished with 12 carries for 1 yard. I would be scared to draft him if my O-line was shaky. Even beyond that, as you said, his field vision and timing on throws need to improve.

For the record I completely agree that you shouldn't take him #1. If you take a QB first overall I go Darnold or Rosen. Has to be.

Oh yeah, he has flaws and he needs to improve for sure. I wouldn't take him over Rosen or Darnold but I would hands down take him over Allen and Lamar. (though Tyrod/Lamar )
