Eh. I put him on the level of Trubisky and Bortles. Developable but a reach in the top 5. Not a QB I'd be "sure about" at all.

 

I still think Jets trade up. They have the 6 pick and 2 second rounders. Makes too much sense to give one of those and maybe a 2019 pick or a midrounder or something to not get leapfrogged by everyone

Mayfield is the one who people think can't translate his college play to the NFL. Bortles/Trubisky were high upside raw prospects. That's Allen.

I just see Mayfield as a project and think Watson was a more promising project. He puts the ball where he wants to put it and I'm not gonna argue with you there. But the way he processes the game and reads plays is not sustainable. And in terms of technique coaches have a lot of work to do to prepare him. You can't just ignore the pocket if you run a 4.81, and he is gonna break himself instead if he keeps trying to break tackles at his size.

Later today I'm gonna rewatch some Watson film and look at his reads because I have this theory on his reads and I want to see if it checks out when I watch film with it in mind

But god he impressed me so much more than I thought he would

 

Mayfield is not a project like Bortles was by ANY stretch. His flaws are correctable.

 

Because I would like Mike Gesicki on the football team I root for.

Bortles 100% had better pocket presence than Mayfield and that's a tough thing to coach. That's the one reason why Bortles survived his rookie contract despite a team with the worst offensive line in the league at the time. Things could've been so much worse if he didn't have that basic foundation.

They both had half field reads and didn't really throw with anticipation

Bortles has better arm strength but Mayfield has far better throwing mechanics and that's where Mayfield has the edge as the prospect. However, not having that prototypical 6'5" 235 size is also a factor (even if it's an overrated factor).

But you're kidding yourself if you think Mayfield is mentally beyond where Bortles was coming out.
