The Patriots are going to draft Joe Burrow and have Tom Brady, Danny Etling, and Joe Burrow as their QBs and I'm going to have to block Dave.

 

You forgot Deshaun and you also forgot the QB who shouldn’t be resigned but will anyway.

Alex was guaranteed 71 million spread out. Jimmy was guaranteed a lot less, 44, and 37 of it is already paid. Considering the 9ers had cap space to waste this year, it’s really a friendly contract.

You’re refusing to look at the context of, if he sucks he can be cut! And the context of, money didn’t matter at all for the 49ers this year, just like it didn’t for us when we were rebuilding and had the most cap space. Meanwhile, Smith retiring is the ONLY way the Redskins got out of paying him for 4 years.

With this context in mind, over the next 3 years you forgot about 3 more QB (in addition to Cousins, Ryan and Rodgers) who are set earn more per year than Jimmy - Matt Stafford, Andrew Luck, and Joe Flacco. Now let’s add in contract extensions to Russell Wilson, Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Deshaun Watson (that’s 10 btw)... and maybe one or two guys who shouldn’t be signed to big numbers, like say out of Dak, Eli, Foles, Bridgewater or Mariota, one of those guys gets way overpaid (seems likely).

It’s actually LIKELY that 9 to 11 QBs end up more expensive than Jimmy G. Also keep in mind that Ryan Tannehill’s numbers at this point in his contract are very close to Jimmy’s.

We can skew this argument by looking at whole contracts all we want... but on a more practical year by year basis, Jimmy’s contract is very friendly in return for the 49ers having the cap space to pay him 80% of his guarantees up front. Idk why you don’t get that the aggregate, overall contract numbers don’t matter as much as how the salary and guarantees are split up within each year of the contract.

As I said, the market resets every 3 years. The newest contracts always look the biggest, but 3 years later they are middle of the pack. That is just how it works.

I'm not refusing to look at that, that's not relevant to how much he's getting paid. If he's not getting paid, why are we discussing how much he's getting paid? That wouldn't make sense.

Andrew Luck just barely, and he's also proven a hell of a lot more than Jimmy G. I have no issues with that.
Joe Flacco no, because he won't be on that contract anymore.

Eli, Foles, Bridgewater, and Mariota are 100 percent not going to get more than Jimmy G. Dak probably not. Wilson absolutely. Goff yes. Wentz maybe let's see if he survives. And Watson yes.

All this is ignoring the entire context of my argument though. You're talking about Wilson, super bowl winner. Wentz, basically an MVP. Goff/Watson stand a great chance at making it there too. These are guys that have EARNED it. Jimmy G had a 7 TD 5 INT season and you're expecting me to look at that and think that's a good contract.

You’re ignoring my main point though-

If Jimmy stays on that contract. He is clearly earning it. Cause he’s so easily cuttable that if he doesn’t live up to that standard that the contract suggests, he can easily be gone. Like you can dismiss his contract just as easily as you can dismiss Flacco’s at that point.

I personally think he has the skills to get paid that. But if the injury has taken away some of his ability, the 49ers also protected themselves from that. If he’s not a top 15 QB then obviously he’s not worth the money and they might be better off trading him and workin with Mullens or drafting a guy. The point is they have that flexibility.

If they come in mid-game in relief, or if it's their first game playing for the team, it's an automatic L.

I never said Flacco is earning it. You said you didn’t consider him a highest paid QB moving forward because the Ravens can just cut him. That same logic applies to Jimmy if he flounders next year. It’s contradicting to throw Flacco out of this discussion but still act like the 49ers are “stuck” paying Jimmy a lot of money.

They didn’t pay him like he’s the best. You’re misinterpreting what a shiny new contract means in the QB market.

They paid him like he’s the most promising up and coming talent who was in a contract year at the time. Compared to his draft class? Bortles / Bridge / Carr / Manziel?? He is!!
