With hindsight we should have drafted someone else. At the time I can see why we did what we did.

Similar to, with hindsight it would have been nice to have a high enough draft pick to draft ____. At the time however, we were not bottom 5 in team talent and we won enough games that shifted our focus to slightly later draft prospects.

Honestly, that's why I don't trust the Steelers in the playoffs. They tied a Browns team coached by Hue Jackson and Todd Haley with Tyrod Taylor at QB and only three carries for Nick Chubb.

I dont see them doing well in the playoffs either. They're basically the team they've been the last 3-4 years, offense can do it, but the defense cant. And maybe the pass rush being better can make up for it...but I dont see it.

I would rather sit through 2-3 years of absolutely terrible 4-12 seasons to at least get some high picks

finishing 8-8 every year does nothing long term

As a Lions fan who sat through 0-6 win seasons for about a decade, there’s a reason a team that loses all the time generally continues to lose. Who runs the team matters a lot more than draft picks. The Seahawks were mediocre to moderately successful before their current era of consistent contention. I think there’s something to be said for locker room atmosphere and a competitive attitude, players don’t want to go to a team that’s always losing, players don’t like playing on a team that’s always losing, but they seem to respond to a coach or culture where, even amidst struggling seasons, the attitude is play to win every day.

This runs counter to my usual feelings about sports, where I tend to err on the side of analytics and logic and yes, put yourself in the best position possible, if you’re out of contention with 3 games left but have a legitimate shot at competing next season, rest veterans and aim for your best shot at success, which means early draft picks. But players want to compete and play and I also think there’s learning and experience to be had in games that don’t have playoff implications for your team.
