There's an economic equilibrium that teams need to evaluate. Western Michigan made only $53,000 for the Cotton Bowl birth last year.

I encourage you to click through and read the whole article, as it breaks down the expenses more. Because it's not just that you have to take the team there. It's that you have to take the team, the coaches, the coaches families, the administration, the band, get a plane for all the equipment of the football team AND all of the band equipment and then all of those people need hotel rooms for the week and all of those people need to eat. I think the major misconception is that the bowl games just provide all of this stuff for them, which isn't the case.

So, it is really a tough call. Should mid-major teams decline all lower-tier bowl games? Financially, probably. But, a bowl like the Cotton Bowl also generated an estimated $69 million in exposure, according to WMU. But that added value isn't tangible and the school is still scraping by to keep all the sports teams afloat. Sure, it brings more mid-week game time slots and preferential treatment from ESPN or CBS Sports this year, but that all goes away with the season they had.

I think you might be inferring that I think it's a cut and dry issue on whether teams should go to bowl games, but it's not, IMO. I am just trying to give context for why FAU might choose to bank some cash and stay close to home.

 

Anyone in here interested in doing a college bowl pick em league? Not sure if everyone would want to do one for free or everyone put in a couple of bucks but it sounds like fun to me.
