I’m not sure what you are referring to, but I was talking about LBJ just blowing through Kuzma on a fast break.

Idk, Virginia used to be the team that would wait out the entire shot clock to offense plus he has a really sweet gig as gods gift to the program. Not that he couldn't be good in the NBA.

Coaching is hard. Not only do you have to out think the other coach, but you have to get your team to understand and follow your vision of success. Sometimes coaching is easy, but only when you have more talent than the other team.

Jason Kidd never embraced the new math of basketball, and he really seemed to find it difficult (except for his first year) to teach his players what was really important about defense. I look at 3 team defensive stats to when judging defensive coaching. 3% allowed, FTr, and % of FG’s allowed at the rim. At the moment, the Buck’s rank 28th, 29th, and 30th in those three important stats. It is basically impossible to have a good defense when you are ranked in the bottom of those 3 triple crown of defense team stats.

How does Tony Bennett rank in the triple crown of defensive stats? (Does he understand what is important and can he teach it effectively?)

In the past 5 years his teams have given up 31.7% from 3. (NCAA average is 34.7%)
In the past 5 years, .306 defensive FTr (NCAA average of .329)
In the past 5 years, 48.1 defensive TS% (NCAA average of 53.5%)

This season, Virginia is in the top 1% in defensive TS%, top 2% in 3%, top 2% in 2p%, top 6% in defensive FTr. Bennett’s team are just the opposite of the Buck’s, they defend 3’s and the paint with an effective passion.

Great coaching is a combination of understanding what needs to be done and how to teach it. From a pure numbers point of view, nobody teaches modern day defense better than Bennett in college. When you consider that his teams normally have less talent than Duke or North Carolina, it is truly amazing what he has been able to accomplish.

Over the past 5 seasons Virginia has given up a 3par of .367. NCAA average is .374.

This stat is a little deceiving. Virginia forces many late shot clock contested 3’s. When they do give up an uncontested 3 (almost never happens), the coach removes the responsible player pretty quickly. His teams are below average in forcing turnovers, but plays smarter than any other team I watch.

Another thing to think about. Virginia, under Bennett has been playing/executing the new math defense for the last 7 years. Seven years ago, few of use had even heard of the concept advance stats in basketball. IMO, not only is Bennett adaptable, he is an early adapter. Many people think of his father as old fashion, but Dick was way ahead of his time (25 years ago) in using the 3 point shot as a major weapon on offense."

my only hesitation about tony bennett as a choice would be that i could see it turning out like billy d where he has a very formidable college playbook but is kind of a lame duck at the next level

I don’t see this Cavs team having any chance against Golden State or Houston, and that’s if they can get past Boston and Toronto. I need to see K-Love play with this group before I count them as a second tier contender though.

If I'm Boston, I'm getting pretty concerned about injuries. Especially Kyrie's knee. He complained about his knee a lot last year, and even mentioned something back in March or April of last season that he was still dealing with pain from surgery. Then there were the rumors over the past month or so that he still needs to get the knee cleaned up. I don't think he was 100% healthy in last year's playoffs due to the knee. He definitely seemed off at times.

I haven't watched him much this year, so I have no idea if that's still the case, but obviously he's going to be missing some time this week to rest his knee. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a more serious issue by the end of this season/ playoffs.
