Hm, it's interesting. If I were a fan I would still feel a little bit uncomfortable wearing the merchandise. But what they think about the name really what matters so I guess live on Redskins

This is the conundrum I always have, especially when the name is predominantly displayed. I also try to avoid using the name as much as possible and try to stick to 'Skins; admittedly, I could do better with that.

Not sure the name should live on, though. Maybe it's better to please the minority of the Native Americans that *are* offended? Not sure, maybe that opens up a can of worms for other issues -- it's just not as black-and-white as the way it's been presented the last several years.

I've always said that it's mostly white people who are offended by the name, and this definitely backs that up.

In the future, actually add an opinion (like you claim you were doing) rather than just posting an insult.

Nobody is "policing" sports threads. If you mock another user and don't add anything useful to a discussion then you can expect to get called out on it. If you don't like getting called out, then don't post comments like that.

This isn't AP. There are different sets of rules here. Everybody has been getting along well here, especially in the sports forum, so we don't need comments like that which lead to arguments with more insults.

I've seen the reported posts and the interaction around them. I recommend everyone take a few minutes and review the rules for engaging others on this forum. Personal attacks, even jokingly if it's not 100% obvious as such between friends, are not allowed. Neither is ganging up on a poster you disagree with who is in the wrong. Please use the report function (or the block feature) and be the bigger person.

Draw the conversation back towards the new stories posted or away from any controversial topics.

    I always just say Washington.

Yeah, that's what I'm kind of thinking but yeah, it definitely makes the situation more complicated. But I mean, if the validity of a name has been debated for decades, it probably should be changed.

I think the biggest challenge is that its ultimately such a minor issue that, compared to the day-to-day issues facing tribes, an NFL name just doesnt register. And thats honestly true of a lot of "major" issues in politics today...if it doesnt affect your day to day life, a lot of people dont have the time to really care.

It has interesting parallels with the Bullets team name change. That wasnt motivate by widespread hate of the name, and I bet about 90-95% of DC residents would have said "Bullets isnt offensive". But Abe Pollin still changed the name to remove the possible association (which is smart marketing/branding), and he changed it right as they opened a new stadium and were embarking on a new chapter.

I think it'd be smart for Dan Snyder to do the same. And do it proactively, rather than being forced into it in exchange for getting land inside DC.

God, please bring the Bullets back, or anything other than the Wizards.

This was a pretty good read on the change from several years ago.

The local high school where I now live used to have Bullets as a mascot and changed to the Bulls in the mid-90s as well.

Funny, I was just reading that because I went searching for any polling on the Bullets name. Made me appreciate Abe Pollin...and, a useful remind of the vanity of sportswriters to miss the forest for the trees on a cultural issue.

Also, the blog this person runs is kinda fascinating. Especially the one on Apache Pizza in Ireland

I've seen some venom directed at the Washington Post for this survey, which is funny because they've been one of the biggest pro-name change advocates out there.

No poll changes the fact that their name is literally a racial slur. That's just a fact, it is. If a poll was run that said 9/10 Native Americans didn't find Chief Wahoo offensive, it'd still be an obviously and overtly racist caricature. That's just what they are.

And the explanation that the Native American population is relatively small for why it's hard to survey Native Americans is dancing around wording that we decimated their population by roughly 12 million in 1500 to 237,000 in 1900.

What about the Native Americans that appreciate the name? Want to keep it? Etc. Do we just ignore them? Granted, all your points still stand, just find it an interesting line.

Kirk is corny as hell, would not shock me if he was serious.

  23. I'd say, yes, ignore them. Their satisfaction or approval of the name shouldn't outweigh the offensiveness taken by a larger group of people.

This isn't necessarily an exact comparison, but let's say the NFL put a team in Mexico City and the owners wanted to name the team Mexico City Gringos. I'm not offended by that, but I'm sure a large number of white people would be. It wouldn't fly as a team nickname.

I don't want to speak for them or anyone but I feel decently comfortable assuming they'd eventually get over a renaming/branding.

Bottom line, that name is an example of how this country appreciates the culture of minorities, in particular ones that this country has driven to almost near extinction, from a position of profit, without any real regards or respect for those people or their culture.

That goes for white people wearing headdresses and whatever stupid cultural appropriating things white people like to do.
