this is like a full scale experiment

can you truly make a bad quarterback good if you give him endless time and weapons? Y/N?

Yeah it's really not a bad move to pick up his option, it does not guarantee he's the 2018 starter, just gives Jags time to evaluate options. It's not like Jags are tight on cap space

Like they're probably gonna draft another QB next year, but would you rather have a QB who at least knows the system who can start off the year, or sign a Josh McCown/Big Brock for 1 year who is also learning a new system along with a rookie?

Teams trade up like crazy for QBs, the draft is always getting shaken up. Sure, yeah everyone expects the Jags to keep picking in the top 5, maybe we are likely to be in good position next year to take my man Browning - I still don't feel totally confident.

If we can't get the one we want in 2018 -- without this fifth year option, we are stuck either settling for some scrub QB, or extending Bortles for real. We have a lot of shit invested in the team now, it's put up or shut up next time we draft a QB and I don't want to be stuck if we can't get it right this draft.

Either this year or next year we'll find a replacement, and if we have to move draft picks around to make that happen, having two years is much better than one.

if Bortles sucks this year, you could've let him go

if hes decent to good, you can just franchise him

they didn't need to pick up the option.

You forget that our other options are Chad Henne and 6th round Brandon Allen who, despite being a smart QB at the college level, athletically he would be kinda like using a go kart in Nascar.

Might be hard to believe but we can do a lot worse than Bortles if we don't have a backup plan for missing in the draft.

If hes not the guy, theres no sense in keeping him/paying him. Even if you "can do worse" than him.

also this def means Caldwell is saving that franchise tag for someone else. Maybe Allen Robinson, so he can front load Lee's deal and work out a better long term payout for ARob.

I really would love to hear how that's anything but a great move, honestly. Like, that's the best possible move they could've made.

I mean it's in no way a great move, but it's not the worst one either lol. Hey maybe it'll give him a boost of confidence and he'll actually play well this year heh

How is it not a great move? Chicago just signed Mike Glennon to an expensive contract for a back-up because they had no other choice. Bortles performs well this year and that's cool but if he doesn't you can draft a QB and boom, you have your one-year stop gap QB for the rookie to sit behind and the best part is Bortles already knows the system. Glennon has what, a month head start on Trubs for Fox's system?

AJ Green + John Ross + Josh Malone is a solid receiving corps.

    yeah good okay Prestigious

John Ross on the outside means two deep safeties, which means room in the middle for Eifert

Too bad Eifert can't stay on the damn field

AJ Green + John Ross + Tyler Boyd + Tyler Eifert is one of the best receiving corps in the NFL. Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Travis Benjamin, and Hunter Henry with Philip Rivers though...

Too bad Allen will likely be injured by Week 5. I do like what the Chargers are doing though, trying to at least load up on skill players for Rivers in his twilight years

Combine all 4 AFCW teams and you get one reeeeally good team. 2 of them have great defenses, while the other 2 have great offenses heh

The Chargers nabbed the best receiver in the draft and followed it up with two great inside linemen. Gus Bradley is indeed a good defensive coordinator and he's got a roster very favorable to his system. If they stay healthy they could seriously compete.

I really am excited to watch the Chargers this year. I'm from San Diego but I've denounced them all my life because of the terrible fanbase. I've always liked Rivers, however..and seeing him get shafted by the move to LA makes me want to root for him more.
