What's the "exactly"? I think I've been pretty clear and consistent on my belief that a calculus of which candidate was worse should not be based upon one issue (and that people did say it, which was being denied), and the specific tweet itself references Susan Sarandon (who was saying it was worth the risk to blow things up) -- which definitely hurts this point from Adam. The second tweet is wrong for a variety of reasons as well, but, I'm assuming those are more self-evident. (And this is before getting into a bigger discussion on believing Trump, if we should arm anyone, etc.)

It was a really bad tweet then, it's a bad tweet now, and the tweet yesterday was ignorant too. Dunno what else there is to say.

 

Like, I feel bad people got conned, but I don't think doubling down on that is a good way forward. Admitting you got conned is far more edifying.

On an online message board frequented by extremists in the United States, an anonymous user last month urged others to bombard social media sites in France in support of Marine Le Pen, the far-right French candidate, by using memes, hashtags and other digital tricks that they successfully employed during last year’s American presidential election. Within days, the online thread — and similar discussions across the internet — was flooded with hundreds of users in the United States offering to help the digital campaign.

But the American tactics have not translated overseas.

Despite such efforts, the far right in the United States and elsewhere has so far failed to reach much of the French electorate ahead of the country’s vote this weekend, according to a review of social media activity done for The New York Times. The analysis, which was based on a review of millions of Twitter messages related to the election since last summer, showed that more than one-third of posts linked to certain political hashtags originated from the United States, although few went viral in France.

 

I dunno, probably the same thing Adam (and countless others) do for their meme tweets pointing out stuff they think is dumb or funny? Just guessing but it seems reasonable.

I feel like the "context for voting for/believing Trump" argument has been had quite a few times. There are a few things in life I don't think my mind is going to be changed on, (but if someone wants to try) ... if, for example, there's a context for why someone is vehemently racist, or their upbringing, I understand it intellectually, I get that ... but I don't agree with their decision making process. I don't agree with anyone that voted for or rationalizes Trump. In some places, I get it, I can understand it, but that doesn't make statements I think are false any better.

 

Surely at some point you have to realize minorities are going to stop trying to explain why they are alienated by Democrats' continued refusal to hear them where they're at on political motivations

 

I think what Jason was saying there is don't take a reaction that isn't what you want to hear as "refusing to hear". You can hear, understand...and still disagree/condemn.

How, as a liberal/leftist, do you help or speak to MENA minorities whose natural inclinations are conservative? Move right?

 

What the fuck does "natural inclinations" mean?

 

Lightning has posted endlessly about how most MENA minorities would generally vote conservative, were it not for various mitigating circumstances.

 

I was under the impression that her argument is, they defer to republicans, for example, because their interests aren't addressed by the left.

i mean, perhaps, but only as much as men can hear, understand, and disagree/condemn women's experiences, or as white people can hear, understand, and disagree/condemn pocs' experiences, as they relate to political goals. which is to say, at least as they function along an axis of that identity, not a lot. MENA minorities have expressed a deep distrust in the democratic ideology as it stands now because of relative ignorance of their conditions. white liberals fundamentally do not have experiences that can inform our judgment of this relationship. something's got to give.
