I think from posts he's writing and demoing stuff. Minor detail, I know.

Well, he cancelled his show with Frank Turner on May 12 due to studio time commitments, so he should at least be heading in soon if he hasn't already.

Hoping he just knocks out LP2 quickly. If he's really going down the same path as Cohen and Dylan, it might just be him and a guitar with some minor instrumental scattered throughout.

Hope he follows "Open All Night" with a Nashville-indebted record. Get in the studio with Dave Cobb and knock out something incredible.

I absolutely love this band and everything they do, but (as obnoxious as this sounds) I would give up my kidney to have another album in my life the caliber of 59 Sound or American Slang

  12. Spun the solo album today, it's still great. I hope the next one has a little less Gaslight but I'm game for whatever sound he chases.

  13. Just checked Instagram and it looks like he was at Lakehouse studio in Asbury today.

it's not my favorite but i still love it. i like that they committed to making a big rock record, while still having their usual fantastic slower cuts like Mae and National Anthem. First 5 tracks are monsters too

Pretty sure Brian could do a Raffi covers album and it would be my AOTY

I'm really riling you up lately huh lol? First AI now this. I think handwritten has some really good stuff - “45” keepsake mae - but overall it mostly bores me. It feels really flat to me. Plus I'll be forever upset blue dahlia was left off

The thing I feel like with that album is they tried to make every moment feel huge, so none of it ends up feeling huge, cause it all feels the same

Except the keepsake riff, which is objectively huge

Yes, you've offended me greatly twice in the past week. Haha

See, I think them going for the huge arena rock record was a logical next step after American Slang. In comparison, Get Hurt feels like they were waffling to me, not really ready to commit to any one direction. I like how much conviction and fire they had on Handwritten. Admittedly, it's not their most dynamic album, and O'Brien probably overproduced it a bit. But it's never bothered me that all the songs--at least up to the last couple--sound so massive. I think Brian was a good enough songwriter by that point that they all felt distinct to me.

I also do not think an album has ever connected with me so precisely, timely, and beautifully like Handwritten did.

It was the album that made all my friends into Gaslight and spurred summer after summer and party after party of Gaslight singalongs. It was the soundtrack to the best summer of my life. And lyrically was everything I was feeling and going through. I'll always hold that album next to the 59' Sound.

I guess I came on too strong to begin with. It isn't bad, but it was really disappointing coming off American slang. I'd almost certainly like it better produced differently. I don't think get hurt is sequenced very well, but I like almost all the songs a lot so it doesn't bother me quite as much. I do think the variety of it helps them a lot, even if it's a bit all over the place
