That being said his trio records are some of the best stuff out there. They were on a different level when it came to improv.. Scott something was the bass player, I used to know more about them but they are incredible.

wtf is cool jazz? Do you mean that as an adjective or as a legit genre descriptor? I do thoroughly enjoy the interplay between all three instruments when I'm paying attention to it, the stripped down nature of it gives the bass the space to occupy both rhythm and busier melody type stuff which I think is cool. I can only assume what's improv most of the time bc I don't know for sure when the beginning jumping off melody is over (if my understanding of improv is right, still super new to the jazz stuff)

Cool jazz is a genre tag- best example is kind of blue by miles Davis or anything by Chet baker

Cool jazz seems like what my dad liked when I was growing up. I don't say this disparagingly, I like a lot of what my dad likes bc that's just how that stuff works i guess

Al Jarreau died today, which got me to finally check out We Get By, and while it's not strictly jazz, it's phenomenal.

So I ran across the phrase "third stream" in my travels today and did some looking up. Every resource I seem to find is fairly vague on the term, but from what I can tell, the mix of classical and jazz is very much up my alley. In particular, "Her" by Stan Getz just knocked me on my ass.

Planning on listening to Stan Getz' Focus, John Lewis' Evolution, some stuff from Modern Jazz Quartet, and Milt Jackson's MJQ.

Anything you'd add to that list @Wharf Rat or anyone else?

  12. Hmmm, tbh idunno. Not my alley, I think Sketches of Spain probably falls there. I'll think more but idk

Depending on where I looked, Sketches of Spain, Porgy and Bess (both of which I love) and Miles Ahead were alternately included or excluded.

Jazz Samba is every bit as excellent as Getz/Gilberto. Totally deserving of the accolades.

Also, George Benson is a god. 50 cents for Weekend in L.A. was highway robbery.

Embarrassed to admit I had never even heard of him until I saw a Cosby Show episode that namedropped him. Where had "Poinciana" been all my life?

Ah, I love this exchange about Ahmad. He's so talented and incredibly friendly. I've been fortunate enough to catch him on stage several times. I originally came to post in here about how I'm seeing Tierney Sutton in a few weeks, but she's no Ahmad Jamal.
