    I'm not brave Prestigious

My girlfriend just surprised me with my first record, Emarosa's "Versus", which is an album I love. She loves collecting vinyl and I'm pretty sure is lowkey trying to get me into it too haha...

Problem is I still don't even own a record player. I'm extremely cheap at the moment and wasn't planning to start investing in vinyl anytime soon... if I'm being honest I may just be using it to play this one record for quite some time. So I'm ideally looking for a player $50 or less with built-in speakers that at the very least won't damage records lol. Can any of you guys help me out? Thanks so much in advance.

$50 is a bit low to be honest. I'd just ask around family members to see if they have any old stuff, and then listen on your girlfriends player for the time being. Not sure what other people here would say, but I think you need a min of $100 or so for anything remotely decent. Might be worth it to try to visit some garage sales since it's nicer out! Don't want you ruining your first record, especially since it's a gift!

My girlfriend doesn't live that close to me haha, we're only able to see each other in person around once a month currently. Family isn't gonna be any help either with this lol, so I guess I could try garage sales or Craigslist or something. Honestly don't think I can justify $100+ to listen to one record right now, so I'll have to look into other options. Thanks though!

I know Crosley's are supposed to be shit, so I'll steer clear of that... but there has to be some other inexpensive model that doesn't damage records right? I'm really not looking for pristine sound quality guys lol, as long as it works it's gonna be fine for now.

That post probably came off as a bit harsh but vinyl is an expensive habit, and I wasn't planning on starting anytime soon since I really don't have the money for it... right now I just want to actually be able to make use of the gift I got instead of selling it. That's literally it. Believe me I would love to actually start collecting vinyl. If I had more disposable money I... well tbh I'd probably start by getting stuff I need more essentially but also can't afford, then move on to vinyl haha

There's nothing wrong with keeping the vinyl as a collectors item for now man! You can even get something so it can be a room accessory and you still get use out of it. Nothing different than if she gave you a photo or scrapbook or something.

Yeah that may be all I do for now honestly even though it's kind of a bummer... not having money sucks lol

Yeah, it's tough sometimes, but it's going to be rewarding when you're finally able to spin it. Keep positive!!

It's way too late, or much too early Prestigious

    I have a Technics Quartz SL-M2, but I think I want to upgrade to a LP1240.

Is anyone here familiar with Mondo? Where to they list their pressing info?

They don't do too many limited pressings anymore. I think most of the newer ones are open unless otherwise noted.

They still have variants, like the Silent Hill OST LP just released apparently had an unannounced black variant. I was just curious if there is a place where it's listed after the fact,

I've never seen them release pressing info about the random inserts. Both the Shaun of the Dead and Iron Giant LPs I got had the random insert color, but I have no idea what the pressing info is for each.

I don't have a record player but have bought a few of my favorite albums on vinyl just to display. Since I can't play them, is it better to keep them sealed? Are newer vinyls generally limited edition? It seems like they are. I don't really have a desire to sell them down the road but it's kind of nice have something that's limited and still sealed. Thanks for any input.

To be honest, it really doesn't matter unless you were trying to sell it down the line for more money than its worth now or really care about keeping it in perfect condition. Keeping it in mint condition vs near mint only really matters value-wise with super rare or sought after variants/pressings. If you're gonna hang onto it and wanna keep it safe, Id recommend putting it in a frame or something like that rather than letting it sit there unopened. Hope this helped!

I normally keep anything that's a limited production of rare variant sealed. Most records are repressed multiple times these days, so you can always get one to actually use later. I'd say that about 50% of my collection is sealed.

Picked up Stage Four and Is Survived By at the Thursday/Touche Amore show last night. Is Survived By is the deluxe edition with the photo book and clear 45 RPM. Discogs says only 200 of these were pressed but I'm assuming that can't be true since this was released over 2 years ago.

If you want to gauge value, check them out on Discogs. Realistically though, for your records to be worth much more than you paid there are a lot of factors, such as popularity of the band, how limited the varient is, how limited other variants are, is it out of print, etc. most of these are almost more important than if it's sealed or not.

My 2 cents... do what you want with them, and don't worry about value now. If you want to crack then open and enjoy the art, go for it! I got into records the same way, and my enjoyment of the physical album art and the record itself eventually inspired me to buy a record player and dive in.
