I was trying to describe myself to someone

That's splitting hairs a bit. He's from Northern Ireland.

I was going to say "United Kingdomness" doesn't roll as well as "Britishness", but if we're honest, they're both shit.

he's from derry, a city so republican there were secret discussions to give it back to the free state; he declared for ireland, i doubt he sees himself as being british or with any relation to the uk

There was a point in my life where I would sing David Moyes' name. I'm glad its over now.

Or, possible he declared for them because they've been the stronger side in recent times...

Either way, this might be one occasion for which Moyes doesn't deserve a pail of shit.

if that was how it worked, jonny evans would play for ireland

and he absolutely deserves a pail of shit for this because the idea of british people being the only ones capable of graft and hardwork is a) insane for anyone, let alone a premiership manager, to believe and b) racist and a stone's throw from saying foreigners are by default lazy

I meant he didn't deserve it for saying Gibson is British. His comments about his whole team has been questionable since he took over.

What Jonny Evans did has absolutely bugger all to do with it. The same reasoning doesn't have to be applied by every player.

  7. I touched on this yesterday, but Mousa Dembele is so underrated by most fans. I love watching him play. Probably my favorite player to watch with the ball. He is so strong and combines that strength with smooth footwork/ball skills. I can't remember the last time I saw an opposing player take the ball away from him. And he makes it look so effortless. Dembele and Wanyama together are a real force.

And I'm completely convinced this new 3-CB formation is here to stay. Although, it wouldn't surprise me if we go after someone like Virgil van Dijk to replace Dier as the third starting CB. Alderweireld-van Dijk-Vertonghen would be awesome. That'd allow Dier to move back to DM, and likely pair with Winks for matches against lesser competition. Not a bad backup DM duo.

Yeah Gibson is Irish, no matter which way you twist it. No one chooses Ireland over the north cause we are "better" conversely the same. To say so is ignoring the history of the two countries.

Anyway, Schweinsteiger is joining Chicago Fire.

Someone should tell James McClean he's British. I'm sure it would go down a treat.

  10. shockingly the irish people in this thread seem to be concerned over irish people being called british

what could the cause of this be ?

Had no internet for the last few days. Considering the result over the weekend (I was there), that was probably for the best.

The Schweinsteiger signing just seems like a mutual waste to me. The organization is in shambles. He won't be enough to turn them around, and history suggests they won't be competent enough to give him a supporting cast.

I just hope he knows what a project he's in for, and of equal importance, I hope the Fire don't think they're off the hook just because they finally got a star. They've got serious catching up to do from bottom to top of that organization.

It's a very strange signing to me, comes across as the owners shouting "look! We are still trying!". It might help Chicago, but it's just a typical MLS big name signing. I'm sure he'll do well, but not enough to make Chicago relevant.

One of my top five favorite players of all time, no doubt. World class goal in his national team retirement match. Classic left foot.

The commentators on ITV were being absolute tools about Podolski last night. Mocked his speech. Mocked the fact that the German national team were giving him such a send off. Mocked the music that played when he was subbed off. Absolutely pathetic. He's achieved more with his country than any England player in the last 40 years, if not ever.

I love Podolski far more than I should, and I still think it's one of Wenger's biggest mistakes that he didn't play him much and then sold him. The man is lethal.

Great to see him get such a good send off, he seems like a great guy and he's achieved so much in his international career.

All any German has to do in response to this is show highlights of any one of England's losses to Germany. Bitter people.

Or perhaps show the ceremony Rooney got for becoming top scorer, coupled with highlights of all his tournament goals. Won't take long.
