I have always had sort of a soft spot for them. I wouldn't call them one of the best acts of this millennium but they certainly have some stand out tracks!

Enter Shikari are a fantastic and wonderfully creative band who unfortunately don't get the respect they deserve, because of how dreadful and inexplicably popular their early singles are. Johnny Sniper and Sorry You're Not a Winner being the two biggest offenders here.

Since then, they've released three fantastic albums, blending electronica and heavy music in a bold and awesome way. They've stayed wonderfully English throughout, resisting even the faintest hint of a transatlantic inflection. They've also became furiously political, no doubt introducing their young ish audience to some worthy political concepts.

They're silly and hyperactive at times, but their records are a bloody joy to listen to, and more people should be giving them a chance.

As someone who can't stand that one album this makes me want to go back and give their other releases a shot.

People can share their unpopular opinions. I don't see how you dont understand that having an "unpopular opinion" is not the problem here. The issue that those of us complaining about this thread are drawing is that you have explicitly said this is not a thread for discussion, which runs counter to the entire purpose and spirit of the site as a whole, and doubly focuses on empty headed, pointless posts that amount to little more than farts in the wind. This approach will allow ignorant, uninformed statements that come with various shades of bigotry to go unchallenged and contribute to the kind of pointless shitposting that happened on AP.net like "what song are you listening to? volume 3044859044."

for instance, @George is doing a great job of actually posting stimulating things! These are good posts.

I really wanna have a discussion about @OhTheWater's most recent post here. I think it's such an interesting topic (that I agree with him on) that a lot of people could have drastically different views on, and I'd enjoy the perspectives a lot.

Okay going to compile some of my super weird/unpopular "best album" opinions in one place here

Danger Days is my favorite MCR album
Singularity is the only Mae album I actually like
My favorite Nate Ruess project is Grand Romantic
I prefer Narrow Stairs to any other Death Cab (don't even know if this is unpopular tbh)
Already covered this, but I like the Offspring more since Americana

I didn't like their album from last year at all. Is that pretty indicative of their other material, or should I listen to a different album I might like more?

  9. This argument seems to be going no where.

The creator of the thread is not saying post bigoted statements and they will go unchallenged. If someone posts bigoted statements they will be dealt with in the same manner as any thread. This thread walks the line to some degree between positive and negative discussion as it's asking for a backlash to occur by its pure existence, but those posting in it should know that because of what it's called ... so there has to be some room for discussion and asking people to explain their opinions in some capacity.

But that also needs to be done with a level of respect and that doesn't become accusatory or, in itself, a hostile discussion.

Ummm, not really haha. Check out Constellations from a flash flood of colour maybe! One of their best songs, no doubt.

    Thanks for posting!

This was seriously just supposed to be fun. It seemed like everyone besides two posters were posting in the spirit intended by the thread.

The truth is I don't understand the inclination to challenge someone's opinions. I know I, for one, can't articulate justification for my opinions the way a lot of people can. "I like AvA albums more than most Blink albums, why? Because I do." Is pretty much the most you are going to get out of me.

The thread was sort of meant to be like that. Why should someone have to justify their unpopular opinion if they don't want to, or in my case, are unable to? I didn't intend for it to become a powder keg.

I think the creative quality of music is currently the best it has ever been and that will be the reason the music industry as we know it finally has a complete collapse.

  16. controversial opinion: trap music is really good and has lots of substance
controversial opinion: the grateful dead are the best american rock band of all time
controversial opinion: musical opinions are not purely subjective and should be able to be defended like any other and to say otherwise is super boring

The only two FOB albums I like are Infinity On High and Save Rock N Roll.

  18. oh here's one: any narrow definition of jazz is really stupid and it's probably not worth trying to define concretely but as long as there's improvisation and syncopation its probably a safe categorization

  19. I think the point is that "I like AvA more than blink-182" is an extremely innocuous statement, whereas saying "trap music [an entire genre of music rooted in Black culture] has no substance" has some very questionable undertones, whether intentional or not. Even saying "I don't like/get trap music" would be much better.

No one cares at all about which blink-182 album someone likes best, it's just that it can be harmful to allow literally any opinion to be posted without having to think critically about it or justify it. I understand you might want to say you like AvA more than blink without having to explain why, but I also think trying to enforce "no discussion" creates an undesirable environment.

This album wormed its way into my Top 10 at the last second because I could NOT stop listening to it in December. So good.

  21. I don't think someone has to "justify" in the sense that they need to prove they're right or wrong, but I think that if someone offers something out there as an opinion there is an expectation that they can explain it to a greater detail than "because I do" - if they can't, that's I guess fine, but I think it holds less weight and shows a lack of thought about the opinion itself.

I think there are really interesting, and fun, things that can come from "unpopular opinions" but I think the fun actually comes from the reasoning. Talking about why you think an album was unjustly maligned (EIIKM) offers so much more than just a passing "because I do" — that kind of stonewalling is akin to spray painting on the wall and saying "cause I felt like it." It's nothing more than a #hottake without real thought behind it and I truly think that's the worst part of the internet these days. I'm not saying anyone has to write a dissertation on an opinion, but I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for more or for clarification and expansion upon one.

Save The World, Lose the Girl is the only Midtown album that I think has held up. I was just listening to Living Well, yesterday and I was like... wow I do not like this anymore. I dunno what it is either, because those songs aren't bad - but they weren't doing it for me anymore... and I've always thought that forget what you know was an absolute mess, aside from a few standout tracks. I never minded that they tried to change their sound with that album, but I don't think they wrote a good record, there.

My unpopular opinion is that I find Taylor Swift's brands of pop insufferably boring and have no idea why so many music-minded folk hold her in such high regard. Her voice is just ok. Her lyricism is subpar at best. She's never come up with anything terribly unique or genre pushing. She's not horrible or anything, just inoffensively mediocre, IMO. There's sooo much great pop music out there these days that I can't fathom why so many gravitate to her.

I didn't mean to say that people participating in this thread were not allowed to offer more clarification if they wanted to and that others were not allowed to ask for more clarification if they wanted to. But, for me, that wasn't why the thread was created. I certainly don't think any of these opinions justified an argument. We are just talking about music afterall.

For me, whether or not I enjoy this music or don't enjoy that music comes down to taste. Not sure how I would go about elaborating on that. So if someone were to ask my why I didn't like something or why I liked something all I have in my arsenal is ::shrug::.

I agree with the hot take observation, but I like hot takes.

Anyways, sorry this went off the rails.
