i may get better but we won't ever get well Prestigious

this was, likely, surprisingly really good. some amazingly intense scenes - the calf birth, the muck pit, the fucking fetus crawler. it did a surprisingly good job of subverting my expectations and getting a visceral reaction out of me - i'm not always even sure why, as on its face it's nothing TOO abnormal.

actually haven't finished it yet, so i'm still trying to suss out the subtext, but i'm pretty sure there's some good stuff about social Darwinism/eugenics racism, plus some classic, good ol' Alien-esque impregnation stuff.

little disappointed by how the turned out to kinda fulfill a boring "I have to kill you for the sake of science and the human race" stereotype though, that could be a not-insignificant lasting impression depending on how the next twenty minutes go.

i'm not sure how ultimately thought provoking it'll end up being, but if you're in the mood for some good, old fashioned, gory horror about fucking cows, it's worth your time!

The Invitation is good but entirely too predictable. I wish it strayed a bit more from the typical formula those types of films follow.

The Conjuring would of a been a better film without the shoehorning of an exorcist bit imo.

Loved the Invitation. Acting across the board was great. It felt a bit like one of those movies that gets labeled mumblecore. Eden's dying monologue was a bit much and out of place.but then the very end was super so that made me feel better.

I didn't think it was predictable at all. It's actually kind of hard for me to describe the way that I felt watching it, especially the first 45ish minutes or so. I don't know if the word is unsettling or not, but the tension build-up throughout the film was masterfully done.

What else has he been in that's worth watching? He was so great in The Invitation.

Well he's mainly known for being really great in the OC. I just always saw immense talent in him and have been expecting him to make a movie like The Invitation for awhile. He was in a really under rated cancelled show called Dark Blue, it was a procedural but it was more on the Justified side of the scale in my opinion and he stole the show. He was also in Devil and Prometheus.

Rewatched 28 Days Later last night. I forgot how great the film is. The way the movie was shot makes it all feel like a big dream... that's the vibe I get from it anyway

I hadn't watched The Grudge since I rented it at Blockbuster when it came out, so I rewatched it last night. Having now seen Ju-on, it's surprisingly similar to the original, though I guess it's not that surprising given that it's directed by the same guy. The scares are pretty effective, Kayako is just immensely creepy and Toshio is equal parts adorable and unsettling. I'm glad to see that this holds up pretty well.

  14. I think The Grudge is one of the least enjoyable movies I've ever seen:uhoh: just my opinion, obviously

When did you see it? It's not amazing or anything, but I enjoyed it. But then Japanese ghost stories just kinda work for me.

The two horror movies I enjoyed least in the last year were Dark Skies, which was a huge waste of time, and Last Shift, which I was actually angry that people online were recommending it, haha

What are some horror films that have come out recently that you guys enjoyed?

I was lucky enough to see The Witch in 2015, but it was fantastic. The Invitation and 10 Cloverfield Lane were also solid.

    I'm Back.

The Witch is the best that I've seen in the past few years....I've seen some other stuff but nothing really worth noting.

    Hey everyone,

Horror enthusiast , long time absolutepunk lurker, and first time poster here.

You guys have me intrigued about Baskin now... I normally use VUDU to purchase/rent independently released horror movies but Baskin is not on there yet. Anywhere else I can watch this film?

  25. A Flirting Time

    Newbie

Kusama succinctly characterized both leads through Eden's machinations and the memories we see stored in the home. And I thought her inward acts of violence, before and during the evening, were enough to deeply humanize the final moments between Will and Eden.

Also very much appreciated The Invitation's depiction of violence, unease, and sex trickling down through established and infected group power systems.

Side note: when a film's genre, tone, and tension derive from the knowing of imminent doom, the idea of "predictability" is moot. the film's gratifications are repeatedly shown to be emotional.
