I went in about as blind as could be (all I knew was the title and description of "a horror movie where much of the horror is racism") and loved it. The first hour especially was absolutely masterful in how it presented the mood, like some kind of most dread inducing Twilight Zone episode of all time it had me feeling legitimately scared. It's such a fully realized film in a way that so many horror movies fall short: the music, the way it goes all in on its themes, the deserved tonal shifts in its final act, the twisty things that become more apparent after viewing ( the explanation of the groundskeeper running by Chris at night threw me for a loop)...I honestly thought it was borderline flawless.

The scene where Chris goes upstairs to find his phone unplugged and we wind up with the closest of close ups on Georgina's face was something else. She destroyed me every time she was on screen.

Any explanation for the deer imagery?

I thought it was just typical rich Westchester stuff but maybe it's because Chris was as much of a deer in the headlights as the actual deer

It seemed to be that the deer represented his mother. It gets hit in the beginning and Chris has to go see it. He can't leave it alone on the cold ground. Then later when they arrive, Rose's father, Dean, states he's happy that they hit and killed the deer. To him they are a pestilence and another forum through which to exert his power. Then we find out what happened to Chris' mother (died alone on the cold ground) and in the end Chris uses the deer's head as a weapon to kill Dean. So what they used to initially manipulate him (his mother's death), he in turn took back. Using the deer's skull seems emblematic of the brains of black bodies cast aside for white empowerment.

Thought it was just a foreshadowing thing. He was being led to his slaughter.

What a fantastic movie. Despite being released in February, this one is going to be remembered for a long time. And I think we're going to look back on it ten, twenty years from now, after Jordan Peele has long established himself as a top horror director writing and directing innovative and clever movies, and we're going to say "He had it from his first try." I think this is the start of something big

I'd really like to see Peele write/direct other genres. He knocked it out of the park with comedy and now this. Let's see what else he can do.

Of course, but selfishly, I'm hoping we get a few more horror movies out of him

Any of you guys have the trailer for Phoenix Forgotten attached to your screening? It really unsettled me and I'm pretty interested in the lack of info that's out about it

I didn't show up to the theater until right when the movie started, but I just Googled "Phoenix Forgotten" and saw Ridley Scott and UFO. I'm in.

    I agree.

Usually not that early though. But it was $3 cheaper than the 3:30 showing. Haha
